I keep saying that if US automakers keep fucking over Canada, the answer shouldn't be, "keep handing them free money." The answer should be, "declare European safety standards acceptable for the Canadian market" and watch the US absolutely shit themselves.
Like, Canada already has tariff-free automobile imports from Europe. You just don't see it happening because of regulatory barriers requiring them to redesign the vehicles for "safety standards."
