Vision Zero is achievable everywhere and no town is too suburban or too rural to move past car dependency. Anyone who disagrees with this should simply not be on a transportation board.

i read something somewhere that the centers of ultra rural towns are surprisingly walkable, there's still people who have to conduct their whole lives locally and that makes ultra rural towns self sustainable. It's the car dependent suburban neighborhoods that suffer from economic collapse because their business strategy is unsustainable and flawed

My grandmother lived in an ultra rural town of 2600. No house was more than half a mile from main street because the residential zones are just grids instead of modern SFH tract development bullshit. Not that that helps though, few people stay there because it's far from any decent sized city. Can't commute from there and not much job opportunity there.

I grew up in a 1500-man town. If you live in town it’s fine, I lived in a shop on the main street so everything was a short walk. You functionally couldn’t live without a car though, not everything was available locally, and the nearest larger town was an hour and a half. My high school was half an hour on a bus. If you lived out of town, on a property, you might as well live in suburbia, since you are driving everywhere.

I go to university in a place with an ok bus network and live a 5 minute walk from the train station, with direct trains to 3 major cities. I'd still want a car, especially as it'd be both cheaper and quicker when I want to go home.

Also some parts of the bus network are so bad, you can be on a bus for 2 hours and still be in the city. It's not even that big of a city either.

My furthest relative that didn't have a car was my grandpa who came from china, but he got a car once he was here and not in the village.
