Literally every passenger carries an altimeter if they care to use it. I wonder how many cyclists would have their phones do an SOS call in that situation?
My phone did once just because I threw my bag too hard and forget my phone messaged my wife if it thought I crashed.
I was divorcing at the time so it was super awkward.

In most cases, it just needs to buy you time to grab something to hang on to or to tighten the belt. Even a loose belt is going to keep you in your seat, you'll just rise up until the belt is tight, then fall back down. If that's 10cm, you bruise your arse and bump your elbow on the arm rest. You'll live.
I fly a *lot* and I've never experienced turbulence that had anyone fly out of their seat, it's very rare because obviously it would be very bad for business and airlines try very hard to avoid it.
