There is absolutely no reason to go gloveless. The few falls I've had have been completely painless because I simply landed on my hands. I'd say they're even more important than helmets.

In summer, with good bar tape, no gloves is far superior for control and confidence. But in winter that's not practical, and for very long rides in the summer, gloves are a nice way to shift your position (the padding actually changes your effective stack and reach without having to touch a wrench). Also good for sun protection

I don't have gloves but have often toyed with the idea. Fuck being low impulse.
The thing is I dont remember the last time none of my wrists and palms constantly hurt. It just takes a few proper crashes a year and something is always up with the hand. I can imagine this little bit of padding to do something. Gloves aren't really an item that you can't put in your pocket at the destination or tuck between saddle rails. No one wants to steal your sweaty gloves anyways.
So yeah. Been on my bucket list for many years, like many things.
Please bully me into ordering gloves now. Also suggest a particular product. Not MTBing btw.

This is same thing a clipless for me. The idea of having to put on special cycling attire goes against everything I love about bikes. Yesterday road 40 miles to camp in gym shorts and a t shirt
Outside of long distance road riding for exercise I just can't be fucked.

bro, you can use any gloves. Like mechanix or leather gloves you get at the store.
If that's considered special, then I don't know what's not special.
Now you are going to tell me you don't wear a helmet, use a water bottle, or lube the chain, since those are "specialized".

my palms sweat but it's never been that bad that i couldn't steer confidently, but I've also fallen during endurance rides with minor scrapes which I blame the tire pressure more than my sweaty palms, also it's just too hot here to even consider gloves in the first place, i don't mind the callouses because i power lift anyways

Just got my first pair for offroad ultraracing. I was fine when I completed my first ultra, but it ate my grips and given that I had stripped those from a random old bike I couldn't get the same ones. Slapped on new touring grips and got nerve damage (and food poisoning) two days into the ultrarace I tried afterwards. Still have numb fingers four months later. Obviously threw off the new grips and changed them out but will be trying gloves for my next touring and racing ventures. We'll see how it goes.

Doesn't look like I'll be using them on roads or decent gravel though. I generally prefer not wearing them even though they can save your skin on crashes.

I suspect that has more to do with however long your ultra-race is. If you are riding flat bars I would use weird alt-bars for more hand positions and maybe even aero bars so you can rest your forearms on it.

I don't race anymore, so I can stop and adjust if my hands hurt that bad..... jesus man. Nerve damage is no joke.

The one I completed took me two weeks and was across worse terrain than the one that gave me nerve damage in two days. I have flat bars but use have spirgrips and aerobars for comfort, the only difference was the grips so it's fairly obvious they're to blame. Could feel it clearly too. Fortunately it's not painful, and I have regained feeling in two of four affected fingers with the remaining ones improving slowly, even though it may take all of 2024 to fully heal.

I rode over 100 miles without gloves recently because I didn't think I needed them. By the end I had a giant blister on my palm which completely ripped off when I hit a pothole. Have been wearing gloves for long rides ever since, even if they look gay.

the main appeal of a road bike is treating stop signs as yield signs and not having to wear any gear, so wearing a helmet and gloves on a road bike is counterproductive because it reduces the appeal
but definitely wear both of those things if you're going mountain biking or motorcycling

cheap gloves from the hardware store, whichever ones fit best. this will do the job for both road and mountain biking just about as well as any expensive "riding gloves", and you won't be too sad if you lose one because they're so easily replaceable
