Why do cagers say certain cars are bad? They all have a roof and can do 100mph, what more do you need?

My mother is a something of a cager, here are the things she likes:

-Visibility. She is a small woman and being able to look up/down/around is reassuring
-Good turning radius, because she sucks at parallel parking and the turning radius is a crutch
-Backup camera, see above
-Easy to operate climate control not buried in 64 layers of LED touch screen bullshit

I have literally never heard her express an interest in the trim, the cup holders, or having good zero to 60. She likes her Kia because the knobs all do what you would expect them to do and the flat screens do the exact same thing an old fashioned car would have done with analog dials, and nothing more. I have also never heard her express an appreciation for proximity sensors that bleep at you when it thinks you're about to back it into a pedestrian. I don't think she trusts those things to be sensitive enough.

It's not that she is a luddite or that she fears tech, but there's a minimum she expects out of a car, and anything beyond that is seen as an unwanted imposition.

My father is pretty much /r/FuckCars/: boomer edition. But back in the day when I had a cage of my own, I appreciated anti-lock brakes, snow tires, and good fuel efficiency. I also considered a shift-it-yourself to be mandatory, mostly because of my fragile male ego.

Personally I prefer old low tech vehicles. In essence it’s mostly about practicality -which is why restrictive vehicles such as sports cars and EVs are less popular even when they are at an affordable price

Which cages have the best visibility? This is literally all I care about. Both times I tried driving the main thing I hated was the lack of visibility compared to a bike. I will buy an 80s shitbox if it has good visibility.

Handling and suspension. Some cars handle like shit. Other cars have vomit inducing suspension.
Fuel economy. Some cars are awful at this.
Engine+transmission combination. Some cars have awfully matched transmissions and as a result driving it is frustrating.
Cupholders, UI/UX (think shitty touchscreens to adjust radio or aircon) etc.
Reliability.

Smaller shitboxes usually. Lower weight = less metal needed to pass crash test. Thinner pilars etc.
Which basically shows how stupid crash tests are. They should crash car into moving avg. car weight deformable barrier, not stationary aluminium block.

Old, single cab trucks from the 80s-90s. The back glass is like 5" from the back of your head.
No use for a rear view mirror, just flip it up. When you have to reverse, turn your head.
Bench seat, manual transmission. Very comfy.

Depends. In Europe an entry level car may struggle to do the speed limit up a large hill. When you need to use full throttle to keep up with the flow of traffic it’s not very nice. A typical cheap car in Europe only has about 70 hp. Many motorcycles have more than that. You can drive full speed and it’s barely faster than the surrounding traffic. You probably won’t be able to maintain 80 mph going up hill even if you have your foot to the floor in a low gear. Forget about overtaking slow moving traffic on country roads. You’ll never be able to accelerate quickly enough to pass safely. I’m talking about Citroen C1s, entry level Toyota Yaris or Aygo, etc. they often only have 1000-1200cc engines.

My 90 hp maxi body van goes like 120 km/h before it runs out of gears. And that thing is 3 m tall and much wider than any small car while being double the weight. There isn't a single new or newish car that can't comfortably keep up with traffic. You will be able to maintain 80 mph on any hill that has a 80 mph limit. Sure it might mean kickdowns and the throttle further open, but cars with bigger engines need the same thing.

Not being able to overtake is a skill problem, not a lack lf power problem. Tho you can use engine power as a crutch if you don't know how to overtake. Hint: you're supposed to accelerate on your own lane.

That's batavophilia in a nutshell. They get angry if you have a bike you like. They aren't even happy with you if you get the bike you need. Because it's about what THEY think you need, which is based on a cartoon version of what "people in europe" need (based on a 2 week spring break to amsterdam)

Literally just having gears and a derailleur makes the batavophile angry because "they don't need those in amsteram". Doesn't matter if you have a 13 degree grade on the way to work, they will question your sanity because "nobody has that, I know because I don't have that"

Disagree. One of the cars I learnt to drive in could be ragged full throttle up to the red line and barely be going faster than surrounding traffic which was accelerating “normally”. It was less than 3 years old. You must live in a pretty flat place if you don’t encounter large hills, because when you need full throttle for ordinary driving it’s not very confidence inspiring. You’ve got no room to manoeuvre if you’re already at the car’s limit.
>as regards my skill level you need to know the overtaking spots in advance to get a “run up” so to speak. It doesn’t matter how you look at it, it’s vastly easier to get to where you’re going in a car with literally twice as much power even if it does weigh 150 kg more
