Likely either taken off the streets in downtown or the streets where it ran through converted to tram only.
The concept of the PE was incredibly forward thinking, of course by its later years the mixed traffic running and other lack of modernisation became a significant drawback.
It's a similar case as with the Key System, a very modern system for its day but it didn't keep up with the times because it was privately run and barely profitable. It had a lot of potential but it didn't get the proper investment it would have needed.
