Surly is in business for your needs. I would imagine any of their offerings would suffice, but the LHT should carry the fattest people still able to walk, as would the MTB offerings, presumably, although maybe not on the offroad terrain they're designed for.

1. Yeah I agree they are not as bomb proof as changing/patching a tube
2. This could be beneficial for stiffness so I see no problem here

I don't disagree with any of his points, but most of the advantages he claims are just "it's cheaper" and "it's easier to service". These don't affect me as I can afford modern stuff and have my LBS service it, and in most cases it makes riding the bike nicer, even if marginally.
As for reliability, countless people have raced the Tour Divide or cycled around the world on modern components without a single catastrophic failure so I think that point is overblown. Yeah old shit is easier to fix but most shit doesn't break in the first place.
Also one thing retrogrouches don't want you to know - hydro dicks are virtually maintenance free and don't require adjustments, as opposed to rim brakes, and it's actually easier to snap a cable than to damage a hydraulic hose.

The "it's easier to service" is also untrue in my experience. Granted I haven't had wireless groupsets and it might apply to them but for regular modern parts the claim doesn't hold. Modern parts are equally servicable the only really difference to old parts is the use of sealed cartridge instead of cup and cone bearings. But those are much more durable and resistant to the elements. You can also easily replace them of the do go bad, so instead of replacing the balls you replace the entire thing.
We can argue abouit whether we need carbon everything but specificaly for forks and seatposts it's strictly superior.

Anyways, 3x allows you to have range and closely spaced gears. Optimal for touring, or road work with hard climbs.
1x allows only 1 of the above generally, or you end up with 12-13 speeds and lots of cross chaining going up a hill, or down one.

Thus 3x allows less cross chaining, cheaper components, and my preferred rapid reduction of gearing via the front derailleur. On 1x I have to fuck the thumb shifter only once or twice with shimano, but sram you have to go BAMBAMBAMBAMBAM to drop gears. With 3x it's one FD shift.

You can shift easily with friction shifting, it's just slower and you need to do it a little to learn. Took me about 60 miles to adjust, but I have good physical capabilities and dexterity.
Index shifting is just unnecessary for most users. I wouldn't say it's bad, just not needed. However once you go down that road it's a slippery slope to single speeding or fixed gear. Since you don't really "need" gears, just stand or walk....

The real issue is that 1x requires these absurd fuck huge cassettes that weigh more than the entire wheel, and ginormous long cage derailleurs that are all bendy and flexy, so on top of the weight issue you get a ton of chain backlash and need to install additional complications in your shifting system which is why they invented shit like clutch derailleurs and narrow-wide because otherwise your chain will fall off every 30 seconds. 3x is annoying too, 2x is the sweet spot.

everything this grouch listed is a boon for the sport of mountain biking. i personally wouldn't go below a gx group and carbon is optional.

Hard disagree. Non indexed shifting is a relic of the past. It's legitimate use cases are for those who are already familiar with bicycles (i.e. cheap ass, vintage, or touring set ups).

Why anyone would recommend friction shifting to a newbie is beyond me. I started on a frictionnl shifting 10 speed and that shit is so slow many, indexing is not that hard to learn and it's definitely worth it. Versus friction which while technically can never go out of alignment would only serve to confuse a new person as their gears are constantly slipping and the front derailleur is constantly rubbing.

It is most definitly not. The novice doesn't want to learn how to operate, setup or repair anything. It just needs to work.
Friction shifting? Takes long to get used to and be able to use it.
Brakes? Hydro discs are idiot proof and require less maintenance than rim brakes.
Suspension? Grandma wants here bike to be comfortable.
Cartridge bearings? Hold up a lot better and longer than cup and cone bearings.

Just go up the cassette, when you hear the chain rubbing the FD trim it down, or shift down if it's too hard, then shift down the cassette a little if requried.

Your chainline is acceptable until it sounds not, which is easy to hear unless you have an e-bike motor or tunes blasting.

If kids like I could figure this out you can too.
