naturally the guy was slow (remember he rode one of those 'e-bikes'). He made a very clumsy appearance, trying to merge into the lane i was on (I had the right of way and cant tell if he was trying to merge regardless or just clumsy af anyways) I made as much space as possible to accomodate for whatever and he caught up when I was waiting at the next light, holding on to the post. He held onto it on the opposite side and like me waited next to me in silence. When the light turned green I took off and I heard him behind me yell something to the effect of 'you're quite the nutcase aren't you?'. I was like 'huh' but really wasn't in the mood to pause my journey to turn around and confront the usual cager false flagging so carried on and that's about it.

It doesn't have a crank sensor or a hand throttle the level of motor assistance is determined by how fast the rear wheel is turning.
There's no brake sensor either it "detects" when you are slowing down

I am not a engineer or anything, but I can see more than a few flaws with the design even if you were dead set on a friction drive system for some strange reason.

It just doesn't seem like a good idea and I don't think it will be successful in the real world or on the open market.

It has the same cons as almost all friction drives.

The only pro is it's easy to install, work on, and take off compard to chain or belt drives.
I am unaware of gas powered hub drives.
But yeah, you are taking on all the many cons of friction drives for easier assembly.

in a perfect world, wouldn't these be parasitic to the cassette? like with a secondary chain and its own dedicated chainring? (you wouldn't shift into it, you'd have to make some modifications so you don't accidentally shift into it)

Is there a reason why this isn't the norm? like it's so obvious and better than friction drive, just need a chain.. idk.
