What are the best cycling trousers?

For years I've worn jeans but I keep getting holes in the crotch area, which is probably where they're rubbing on the saddle.

I have one pair of cotton jogging trousers so I might start wearing those for cycling.

What trousers do you guys wear? I can't be bothered with lycra trousers just for commuting short distances.
