Tourism? Can't carry their luggage around outside the station, so they rent a car.
Work? No one is commuting this distance for work. If they do it occasionally, they still rent a car to go from the station to their office.
Family visits? They get picked up from the station by a family member in a car.
This is literally air travel but slower.
Is that the point? To sacrifice speed for lower cost?
Air travel is cheap enough for most people as it is, and for those extra broke ones, they can take a bus.
