I remember that case. Nothing in that article made sense. The cops showed up at her house at 8:30 pm, which is after dark. She allegedly kicked him out of the car after karate class, but kids' karate classes don't run that late. CPS was also called well after dark and had sent someone over—what PROBABLY happened is that police figured that she was lying about the karate classes (8:15 is hours after these end) and the kid was probably out there for hours.

When I was a kid, our school was so overcrowded you couldn't fit the entire student body in the gym at once for an assembly. So they'd march the entire student body (except maybe the kindergartners I guess) 1.5 km away to the nearest high school.
Seriously, picture a giant train of 450 children on a forced-march in the winter.
We'd also do it for skating lessons to the rink 2 km away, but that was in smaller groups.

Don't be dramatic. "30 degree weather" is just barely sub-freezing. That's less than a 2 hour walk. Anyone who isn't sick or disabled would be able to do that just fine. It's america so you know the kid is well insulated in blubber too.

I have a friend living in the US and he said that the people around him, neighbors and friends just dont walk. They wont walk a mile to some store and take the car. Its an alien concept for them to make short commutes by foot.
And where i live its common that 6-7 year old kids walk alone to school or take the bus.

I walked to school during kindergarten and up to 3rd grade. Grandma walked with me sometimes. Then I moved and walked to school again for a similar distance, supposedly my mom stalked me back then for a bit but I didn't notice.
After 5th grade we went to middle school/junior high and I got the bus ride since it was 2 miles. Around 7th grade I just rode my bike since I was told to and it was fine.
High school I got carpooled since I was friends with a neighbor, but we grew apart and I was fine cycling to school, was around 6 miles.
College I cycled to school to the local community college, but other classes were 20 miles away and I rode my scooter.

Murica, was in reasonably nice neighborhoods with reasonable weather.
Honestly hated taking the car to school since it was a ZOO with all the cars dropping off 1 kid in a tight parking lot.

Now I see kids taking e-scoots mostly, or car drop offs.

If you're trying to split hairs with arguments like that you're completely missing the point (or "yeah walking to school is only a four hour trip"). OP's claim was that it was "illegal" to walk a few blocks to school or be unattended for any length of time, which is factually untrue but that's what people actually believe because they just read the headlines and make assumptions.

I don't get it either but I'm sure the hollywood fantasy does play a large role on it, I grew up watching Baywatch and later Laguna beach or the OC and used to think California was the greatest thing in the world, same with NY and its gritty appeal but then bam internet and you start learning more and more about the country and realize it's no different than Russia, China or Italy, a place where a tiny part of the population surfs the wave and controls the money and writes the laws while the middle class slowly but surely erodes and people at the bottom are nothing but disposable cattle to the higher ups.

I will always admire the US for its natural beauty and wild country but also despise it for the export of americanism. But desu I blame ourselves more for embracing mcdonalds and starfucks as if that was the second coming of Christ.

But if a ten year old decides he wants to go to town and do so it really seems to be illegal, so OP is right. Why else would the cops arrest the mom?
Also if there is a legal distance to go alone, maybe even depending on the weather, the police should really tell their citizens so they know where they are allowed to walk to.
