How the fuck did the Chinese managed to develop cities that are home to 30+M people with all the infrastructure necessary for it to function and in the west we can't even sort out the housing crisis?

Chongqing has a weird geography where a big chunk of the city is just slightly above the water level next to a huge river then the rest of the city sits on various plateaus on top of the mountains that surround the river. No other major city is built like that.

Because all land in China belongs to the party, while a lot of the land in the US is privately owned. This inscentivises people to be asses and stall any developments because the more they do, the higher the likelyhood of gubment giving them a big fat payout to make them fuck off is. I don't know about other countries but our PM literally stated home prices cannot be allowed to decline because investors must be protected. They aren't even motivated to solve the problem because it's not a problem to them. They would rather tinker with inflationary grants and tax benefits to keep people from getting too angry.

Your premise doesn't even make sense, how does anyone live off the value of their home unless they reverse mortgage? In which case their home goes to the bank and not their descendants. Young people can't afford anything to 'invest' in and are perpetual renters, which only enriches existing property owners. Real estate companies are still making bank, thanks again to inflated prices. Young people can't form families in apartments living paycheck to paycheck, so the government replaces potential children with imported adults who immediately require housing, further inflating through scarcity. If there's ever a mortgage crisis the government will print billions to bail them out and inflate the currency. In the end, we will all own nothing and be happy. Everyone loses except the ultra wealthy.
