They weren't really replaced, there just weren't many of them ordered because they were a stop-gap locomotive to supplement an aging F40PH fleet until a new passenger locomotive could be adopted. It was just a freight Dash 8 with passenger gearing and HEP added. Most are still in service. Not long afterward Amtrak started taking deliveries of Genesis locomotives, which shared a lot of common mechanical components despite a much different appearance.

Kinda retarded, innit? Smoking is a dumb idea for sure but I can't deny smelling it brings back memories and nostalgia. Around here almost no one is smoking anymore. Probably because it became restrictively expensive. 20 years ago it was everywhere but then they also forbid it in restaurants and many public places.
And I guess the rarity of running into a cigarette smoke cloud adds to the nostalgia.
