I think the arms race thing kinda makes sense when you see how extreme people ride now. It's pretty fucking cool. There's no way people where doing that shit back in the days.
Surrounding truck culture is gay but you can have a mtb without doing that. Personally I don't want to hurt myself so i prefer more chill riding. The mtb i want is a weight weenie XC hardtail with a remote lockout fork and dropper.
