Quebec City in Phase 1 is such a blatant politically motivated play.
That leg will balloon the cost and construction time for no functional benefit.
Air Canada being involved will almost surely act as a bulwark to prevent the train from competing with shorthaul airline flights.

That being said, it's been such a long time coming that I don't even care. 300km/h trains in Canada, it's perfect.

The speed got upgraded to 300 km/h because all three bidders' technical analyses said there's not much cost difference between building 225 km/h rail as originally planned and going up to 300 km/h. Probably because most the the tracks where the top operating speed would be achieved is in the flat terrain in the middle of nowhere.

SNC-Lavalin has plenty of experience building rail projects in and out of Canada, so that's not the problem. The problem is that it's part of the Canadian political corruption machine, and large projects they're involved in tend to go way above budget then a big chunk of that extra money gets distributed to subcontractors that have financial connections to politicians.

HSR-specific stuff is what the other members of consortium are for, namely Keolis (SNCF joint venture with the Quebec retirement fund), SYSTRA (SNCF-RATP JV w/ other partners), SNCF Voyageurs (train ops subsidiary of SNCF). Morocco successfully built HSR with SNCF advising local civil engineering firms, I don't see how SNC-Lavalin lacks the capability to build structures to SNCF's specs.

Liberals are Lying ... again. Just like they always do . There will be no High speed rail . They will have to build a completely different rail system from Quebec City to Toronto -- it would have to by pass every small tow on the way -- It would have to have over passes/ underpasses for every road and level crossing -- they would have to have tunnels / over passes for every rail line that crosses it
So $25-$35 Billion dollars -- that can't be used for any other train -- it only has 3 stops -- and costs as much as VIA rail dos a year to run ( or more ) -- and will operate at a loss it's entire life

We have done this 3 times before --

That is the plan. It's building off of a High Frequency project VIA had from 2021 that required building segregated rail lines.
Then they figured they might as well slap high speed on it.

What usually happens when an airline is involved? Do they try to park the stops near airports so that they can offer HSR transfers? Or do they try to sabotage the line so that HSR is slower/more expensive than flying?

During the planning phase, the consortium building the HSR gets to look at Via Rail passenger traffic data in very close detail to determine the necessary capacity. This information can be used by Air Canada to undermine Via Rail and divert more rail passengers towards planes. Air Canada is also incentivized to advocate for design decisions that would make HSR less competitive to their consortium partners.
