Why on earth would normal people CHOOSE to live in the suburbs?
They don't have the space or beautiful views and nature of rural living. They don't have the skyscraper views, liveliness and cool amenities/architecture of cities. longer commute than both. Less things to do than both. Way longer commute than both.
Suburbs distracts people from how boring their life is, so they begin to find joy in the pointlessness of it all and all the busy work.
Mow your lawn again and again forever. Manage the "garden". Get into fun fights with your neighbor over property lines or what color the fence should be. Get angry at people driving too fast. Pick up dog shit off your lawn. Attend HOA meetings to argue passionately about things that don't matter. Feeling bored, well time to redecorate and remodel the house you have guests over at only a few times a year. Post on NextDoor or the neighborhood Facebook group about the dark skinned man you saw acting suspicious if you're feeling social. Did you see David 2 houses down has a new boat and new sports car, well I can't let him have the nicest toys around I'll take out a loan so my driveway has a nicer toy in it. Walk around the neighborhood on the same route every time to see the same houses every day. There's little games to play in the neighborhood too to keep you occupied like You've Been Boo'd or report Steve to the HOA because his door is the wrong shade of red. Oh bless my heart it's already the holidays again we've got to cover the yard and outside of the house with decorations! But if that's not enough excitement for you, you can DRIVE the family to the WALKABLE mall/outdoor shopping/historic downtown to feel somewhat human again.
I guess if your life is that dull then driving 40 minutes for groceries or an hour or 2 to work doesn't seem that bad. It's not like anything else is going on in your uneventful life
