I have family in Florida and my gf has family in Boston. So we would book a roomette on the Auto Train (Amtrak featured route from Tampa to Washington DC) and then switch trains from there to Boston (also with roomette). From what I can tell, we both would need a coach ticket, and then one roomette fee. With the date I selected, that's 290 for both coaches and 673 for the roomette. We're in Nashville, so budget flights to Florida and then back to Nashville from Boston would probably be 300.
Normally, we'd be paying around 500 for an Airbnb even when we're visiting family (for sexual reasons). So it wouldn't be THAT much worse if we did the train trip instead of booking any Airbnb, and stayed with family on either end for a day or two.
Also we'd be combining two trips we'd be taking in the same year into one, and be saving money that way. It's just hard to gauge how enjoyable it would be. We both are interested in traveling by train, but those roomettes are awful small, and like I said earlier, seems like the overall quality is hit or miss. We would probably be in Viewliners which are better than Superliners. But I don't think eastern routes have the observation lounges.
