I’m a 20 year old dash 8 first officer and I’ve never used an ADF in my life. For example in this approach. Do I have to do a procedure turn? If I come from the south west (244) can I just fly at the MSA and has I’m 10 dme from the vor descend to 1700 feet and then start descending at 4.3 dme until the MDA? Is that good?

I don't see a VOR on that chart. Only a NDB. An NDB only gives "orientation directly towards the beacon." No distance or course. So you won't have a DME reading so much as, "can you see the field yet?"
I think the hill on the chart is supposed to be your reference.
Well, I guess in reality you'd enter it into your GPS and completely ignore the 1950's radio navigation at this backwater. But I'm just a larper so the old school navigation tickles my autism.

Yeah they do, and it’s not as hard as it looks. The dumbass plate OP posted looks like some Canadian garbage; US government and Jeppesen plates are better formatted.

How do you make it to the right seat of a dash 8 without knowing the 3:1 rule? Every 1000 ft corresponds to 3 nm lateral distance on a 3° glidepath. This can be used for any descent, be it a STAR or visual approach. It can be coupled with other rules of thumb to, but that’s another topic. A 3 mile final you should be at 1000 ft AFE, 6 mile final 2000 ft AFE. You can use the 300’/1nm for easy calculations. If I want to intercept a 5 mile final, 5x3[00]= 15[00]. I should be at 1500 ft AFE, which will be slightly lower than a 3° glidepath, but the numbers are easier than multiplying by 333 and it’s good for situational awareness.

Op here, Oh yeah I know that rule but I do it a different way. To find out where I need to start descending I do the difference of altitude X 3 divided by 1000. That’s when I know my top of descend. In order to stay on a 3 degree glide path I multiply my ground speed by 5

The idea is that, since this is NDB , it assumes you don't necessarily have DME, GPS, etc. (There isn't even a DME installation here anyways). If you can't guarantee how far you are from the NDB then the only safe way to be sure is to overfly the NDB, fly outbound, perform a proc turn (protected area is quite big) and fly back inbound at MDA. If a proc turn is not required, it'll say somewhere "NO PT [min alt]" like in pic rel.
Now if you wanna fly it with GPS assistance then it's probably still safe, but then you may as well use the RNAV plates instead.

Overfly the NDB, time for 1 min or whatever is standard for your aircraft (helos we normally do 2 min, fixed wing normally did 1 min) at that 1 min, turn left 199, time for another 1 min, turn back 180 to 019 until you're back on the 244 radial (064 heading) and then once you're on the 3 degree glideslope you can start to come down from your 1700 to your MDA of 1040.

If they just give you vectors though you obviously don't have to do any of that and just listen to them
