The truth is people will exploit these systems ruthlessly and there's largely zero enforcement because visually speaking there's not an immediately identifiable difference between these kinds of bikes, where you can just hold down the trigger and go 45 MPH with no license for a fraction of the cost of a comparable gas scooter.
And unsurprisingly, people don't enjoy sharing sidewalks with that- and people walk/jog in the bike lanes all the time, which is gonna lead to accidents.
There's just not enough space left over for the tiny bike lane we get going each way. Bikes used to go more or less all the same speed. Now you've got UberJeets drivers with rented and modded ebikes who drive like they never left Mumbai, and clueless new riders who get flattened in accidents.
