He would not have podiumed. Merrier was an easy 3rd and mvdp and tadej were way ahead.

That being said bike changes exist. MVDP did a bike change 500m from the end of the final cobbled section switching to skinny tires.

i've fully embraced tubeless, waxed chains, power meters and all the other modern trimmings of cycling, but electronic shifting is something i will never be on board with. i simply don't want to have the problems that di2 users have like forgetting to charge your battery (a bicycle with a battery LMAO) before a group ride and not being able to change gears, or some japanese jew at shimano headquarters turning off my speed as a safety mechanism because something inside the electronics is on the fritz or the battery died. bicycles should not have batteries in them, end of story.

I'd welcome electronic shifters if there was any real advantage. The problem is that the shifters are too mechanically simple, meaning t here is no advantage to it.
If you get something like a controllable CVR, and worked out the worst kinks, a e-shifter might be good if cable tension isn't good enough for more gear granularity.

Electronic shifting is objectively better.
Cables stretch and even the most high end shifter mechanism will have a different pull stroke for each gear
di2/etaps just works especially in 2x set ups

Still ride steel frames bikes with clincher tyres and inner tubes, cables, no sat nav, no batteries at all, dynamo powers my lights.

Love it. There's no impediment to my cycling that I can't fix with a couple of tools.
