no current bike guy general, so starting one.

opinions on this bike as a beginner gravel/bikepacking/commuter bike? it has a steel frame and sora components (which I assume are easy to change to something better) and seems to take 45mm tires which is good. thinking of negotiating to 700 or so (CAD). my other choice is a alum/carbon fork gravel bike with less tire clearance (older) and 105 components for 875.

Sora is fine. I looked at the spec sheet, and it's Sora with 3x chainrings. Bike enthusiasts look down on 3x, but this is actually a huge plus for beginners as 3x generally provides much larger gear range than 1x or 2x, and you can do steep climbs while your leg muscle strength builds up.

Basically, if you do get this bike, ride with the current 3x Sora set up until you get stronger, and during that time decide if you want to keep riding 3x (which many bike enthusiasts do) or switch to 1x or 2x drivetrain (or sell this bike and get a different one that comes stock with 1x/2x).

I dont like the brakes because they push from 1 side only, the rims are hookless so harder tubeless, so I would say just go for a new bike, its nice to be the first to fart on the seat

get a brand new dropbar redwood its on sale for 600 mutt bucks, or a marlin or smth

Some people's definition of gravel biking mean is riding that's as sportive as road biking but on unpaved surfaces. This is not the bike for that. It's a bikepacking/adventuring rig. It's pretty much ideal for multi-day trips with unknown horizons and commuting. But it's also entry-level, heavy, unsportive and not all that fast. The mechanical disc brakes can be a pain to set up but once adjusted they stop well. For me the cargo-abilites are nice because when I got bikepacking once a year I can pack my regular hiking shit instead of buying redundant multiples of ultra-light compact gear.

Not sure circa 50% of RRP is a “great deal” for a 14 year old bike. Looks in relatively good condition but I would call that price good for the seller.

Most people will outright reject mechanical disc breaks. No one ever likes to hear it but just double your budget on something new or hardly used.

It’s a nice looking frame made from mid-range steel tubing so I guess it comes down to personal preference.

This review says otherwise. Not saying don’t buy it as it can take months / years to come across a better bike for that price at that size. The only issue is when after buying this you see a better bike with hydro discs and then end up buying that too. Hence the advice to just splash on something you’re not going to want to replace in a year.

I’m also looking for that illusive 853/953 frame to come up on EBay.

Before you pay for it, test for seatpost slip. Bounce on the saddle a few times and check if it sunk. Jamis are notorious for it.

Since you seem to know about Jamis, is that old stem really so shitty and is this a good choice of bike? I kinda just want a drop bar bike with good enough specs to tide me over until I can afford a real gravel bike later.

I only ever had 1 Jamis and it was a mountain bike, but it was badly designed and built.
The seat tube diameter was so out of spec that even a seatpost larger by 0.1 mm than what's supposed to go there would slip with carbon assembly paste. I tried contacting their customer support but they dodged responsibility, but I guess that doesn't matter to you when buying used.
The stem is shit but can be easily replaced.
The bike itself seems to be a touring bike stripped of racks and mudguards, so it might feel heavy or sluggish when used for pure gravel riding.
Also, before committing, check for heel rub on the chainstays, I also had that problem on my Jamis that I never experienced on any other bike.

also might be heavy but durable as fuck and new steel too, not sure of weight but it's probably 14kg or so, only issue is I have to drive 2 hours to it.

Just swap the stem out for $20 and you’re fine. Who knows the seller might go down to $400-500. Don’t think you’ll have seatpost issues with a 27.2 steel frame.

This is personal preference as angled top tubes disgust me.

So I got an absoluteBlack oval chainring some time ago and it's served me very well. I'm pretty autistic about chains so I haven't needed to replace it but it's getting there.

Here's the thing though. Since I got it I saw this whole youtube drama about how they sent goons after the h-mb-n- youtuber (admittedly he is a troll and kind of annoying). I don't love h-mb-n- but I love corporations much less, and corporate goons trying to silence people even more

I love oval chainrings but I'll give it up if these fuckers are like that, what does /n/ think? is it true? am I compromising my values if I buy another absoluteBlack chainring?

I'm seriously leaning towards just getting a default round one like before, it's way easier and I can literally just order one and drop it on. the absoluteBlack one needs some modifications to even fit my bike hence why I've been putting it off for so long

Ehhh. They are oddly enough popular for trials so the're must be something. My experience is that they're finicky to set up which leads to bad setups which leads to disc warping which leads to even worse setups with the barrel adjusters. Frame is nice

Z510hx was 'the chain' to run on a fixie for a good while, and I had that too. I'm really neurotic about drivetrain cleanliness so I was constantly taking the chain on and off for deep cleaning.
