Vastly better grip to the seats, so you aren't sliding around like on a plastic seat.
And the "fabric" is more like fibreglass. As in, it's a layer of fabric stretched over the plastic base (not padded) and then liberally glued down with resin. It's not fabric anymore at that point.
I have seen splits on seats. It doesn't soak up anything. It just sits on it the same as a plastic seat.
