So I'm trying to replace my bike chain but when I put it in it didn't work cause it kept getting stuck in the derailleur when I tried to drive. Can I just shorten the chain and not put it in the derailleur and drive like that? I know I can only use 1 gear then but I only need 1 gear so it's fine.

Lubed up the links?
Checked on chain wear?

The chain is new and I did apply oil. Im not sure what you mean by adjusting the derailleur.

what? Why do you need a derailleur for that. You push the pedal and the chain moves the wheels.
Here's a picture: A one gear bike that doesn't have a derailleur.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean put the chain in the correct gear wheel? Because I tried all the wheels and they all did the same.

no I mean how you put it on the jokey wheels and routed it throught the cage
some people for some reason can unironically fuck that up.
Some. cages for example have a small bent up tab in the middle and people for some reason put the chain on the wrong side. Once they try to move it it'll appear seized.

I'm pretty sure I put it in correctly, clockwise on the top and counterclockwise at the bottom. Theres a metal thing in the middle underneath the top wheel and I think I'm supposed to go below that. I can hopefully make pictures tomorrow.

UPDATE I got the chain in correctly after putting it through the derailleur correctly, so thank you for reminding me of that.
It sort of works, i can ride it now, but the bike makes a *CLANK* noise and stutters whenever I drive uphill. Do I just need to put more oil on the chain for that?

No, you need to dial it in since your old chain is probably worn to bits and shifted differently. Or your cassette is worn and won’t mesh with a fresh chain.
That can easily happen to a drivetrain that has seen too many miles on a bad chain.

If you ride your chain too long, when you eventually replace it you have to replace everything.

if you didn't size the chain (removing excess links) you have too much chain slack and when you go from coasting to pedaling there's a whiplash effect that's causing the clunk. there's also not enough tension to keep the jockey wheels in the right position under varying load
