Is vaping in bus / metro / trains illegal ? ive seen some kids vaping and blowing the smoke in their hoodies or sometimes keeping the smoke in their lungs until it becomes barely visible. Are there like smoke detectors on them ?

on american trains, yes
most smoke alarms will pick them up but you can avoid them
what you are referring to is ghosting but some absolute degens zero it which involves swallowing whatever you didn't ghost. no cloud at all
i notice when people do it but many don't so i ignore it on my trains until they are rude to others with it

well i've never been on a single bus, other than a school bus, in my entire life
when i'm conductor i don't allow people to stink up my trains. vaping doesn't usually do that so i let it go
cigarettes are another issue and i have zero tolerance for that, mostly because smokers have burned down forests that i very much liked from the train. the smell also permeates the whole train no matter what vestibule you smoke in.

aren't smoke alarms triggered by temperature? IIRC exhaled vape clouds don't reach the necessary temps to trigger it. Or are those old smoke alarm?

Some smoke alarms work by having a small radioactive element thats detected by the alarms trigger. When smoke enters the monitor, it blocks out the radiation and that trips the alarm. A dense vapor cloud potentially do that as well
