The freshwater distinction seems a little odd from a British perspective as we had few freshwater steamer routes and they used the same vessels as our numerous coastal/estuary steamer networks. AFAIK our only regular public service freshwater steamer route is now Coniston Water* (pic related), in The Lake District. And there were never any lakes outside there with passenger ferries. While Windermere* and Ullswater* still have 'steamers', they've all been converted to diesel.

* British lake and river naming is quirky

Windermere actually has a really nice Steamboat Museum, but sods law while I holidayed up there last summer, it's closed for a massive expansion and refurbishment.

Aside from numerous steamers on Lake Brienz and Lake Thun in Switzerland, the only one I've been on is MV Waverley, which tours Great Britain every year. It was a pretty magical trip from Penarth to Ilframcombe and back via Clevedon.

(cont.) Unfortunately everything that could go wrong seemed to do so that day. It got delayed turning up to collect us due to a security cordon around an unexpected Type 45 destroyer, and then at every stop the helmsman managed to fuck up the approach and have to re-do once or twice. Only left us just over an hour to explore Ilfracombe, and finished 3 hours late, nearly missing the last train home.

I think the best thing about the Waverley is just how open up the engine room is for viewing. they didn't have that in Switzerland.

This was the regular summer network for the Bristol Channel (where I live) up to around 1970.

Gods, to have been around a few decades ago.

Various businessmen and groups keep trying to get new services up and running (modern fast boats though) but nothing come of it over 10 or so years.

No thread about freshwater steamers would be complete without mentioning USS Sable and USS Wolverine, two paddle steamers converted to aircraft carriers and used for training on Lake Michigan during WWII.

M/S Mount Washington, still in service on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Modern highways around the lake get you places faster so now it does scenic cruises.

The lake also has USPS mail boats that deliver to several of the larger islands during the summer, and which take passengers.
