the Raleigh Factory made most of the bike and they had their own standards for headsets and bottom brackets (i.e. 26tpi instead of 24tpi) so these parts couldn't be interchanged with the higher quality Japanese (J.I.S.) parts that were compatible with the most other British Company's (B.S.I.) standards.

Other countries eventually fell in line with the J.I.S. standards. Italy used 26tpi but had a different screw pitch diameter. French made the most sense because it was all metric. Swiss was like French except the BB fixed cup threads were reversed.

TL;DR - summary - if you're buying a used bike frame, either get something from the 1980s or later because it will be compatible with the most commonly available parts

My fave bike posted up on here was a 90's trek, i think a 720, that had been totally re-done with drops, some nice racks and fenders, different group etc - sadly the guy had it stolen recently.
People shit on these bikes as they're seen as just commuters - the geometry is often good for other stuff too though with plenty of clearance for fat ass tires, the steel is usually pretty decent, and having cantis is a bonus also.

For starters, those are mini-V brakes, which are designed to work with road levers, instead of modern mountain bike levers. Mine are Paul Components, but TRP and Tektro both make nice ones.

They're really nice. Less finger effort, better modulation, and more stopping power than canti brakes. Downsides: they require setting the pads closer to the rim, so they're less forgiving of out-of-true rims, or mud buildup. The transverse cable ends up quite low over the tire, which means you can't easily use fenders.

Second, those aren't SIS levers. They're standard Tektro drop bar levers with bar end shifter mounted on them. Neat little product from Gevenalle. Much more robust that brifters, abet a little less convenient - you can only really shift from the hoods.

I'm not sure what >>958866 is doing, because those look like normal mountain V-brakes.

You should be able to do 100+ miles on a good saddle (as in, not a Brooks; Brooks are pure fucking shit), fuck, even 200 if your legs can handle it, without your ass hurting if your bike is adjusted correctly.

For the tandem, the Xtracycle is really nice when heading to the beach. It's very practical. It can easily haul more than what two people need for an afternoon. Regarding the brake cable (and the rear shifter cable for the internal hub), you can buy them on ebay all day long for under $10. Off the top of my head, the brake cable is 3500mm and the shifter cable is 4000mm.

I scored the pantographed chain ring on eBay. The listing had a slight error when the Italian guy translated into English so I was the only bidder.

My Paramount is a really nice ride. I have come to really enjoy the straight front fork and how precise the bike is.

Yes, those are the VO Dajia Far bars. The OEM is Satori,it's their "Boondocks" bar. Origin 8 also re-sells them as a "Gary Ergo Sweep" bar, but they're all the same Satori Boondocks bar.

I like it a lot. It's a wee bit tricky to set up such that the drops at a comfortably horizontal angle while the hoods/ramps are still usable, but it's doable (Unlike, say, the Salsa Woodchipper). Up in the hooks is super stable for descending, even on rough and rooted trails.

Yeah I don't think I would have paid that for one, but I found it on a sale rack for about a 1/3 of the going price and decided to get it. So far so good with it as well, it works great. probably. take it to your nearest LBS and ask them, or if you have any 700c wheels kicking around try to put them in the dropouts.

depending on the brakes you have and who makes your frame you might also have to replace or seriously adjust your brakes.

For the price I would recommend, at the price point I was able to buy all the bags and camping stuff under budget. Only two complaints is one, there is no 3rd bottle mount. Is the the gap on the chainstays and the tire is somewhat tight so you have to be pretty careful when putting the rear tire in or it will rub hardcore. Also the rear eyelets are reversed from standard and that can also cause rubbing. Other than that I've put about 500ish miles on it so far. Just got it a few months ago, doing mostly weekend trips nothing major. It's pretty great and personally I love the classic touring look.

Yes. 700c wheels are 622 mm in diameter at the point where the bead seats onto the rim (this is the ISO designation commonly called the bead seat diameter or BSD). 27" wheels have a BSD of 630 mm.
Simple maths show that you would only need to move your brake pads down 4 mm to accommodate the new wheels (8 mm difference in diameter means that there is a 4 mm difference in radius). You might have to purchase new brakes if you cannot move the pads down far enough.
From your photo, it looks like you might have enough adjustment in the front and rear to make it work with your current brakes.
If your current brakes can't reach, consult your LBS or bike co-op on what to buy. I personally am a fan of Tektro's brake calipers for this kind of job, since they make them in a large range of reaches for both recessed and hex bolt mounting.

most are, the chains are better usually but they could be just as bad coporate policy usually keeps them from fucking up too much though

Like I described. The fatigue threshold is so low is can't handle much deformation without weakening. This is unrelated to the plasticity threshold, and aluminium flexes back as long as the deformation does not pass this limit. The problem is it's likely to have weakened in the process while steel wouldn't.

Too small for you but you could probably make it work if you're desperate. Ask for the distance between the top tube and the ground and see if that's a few cm less than your innerseam. You don't absolutely need standover clearance but it's nice. You'd also be pretty stretched out on it reaching for those levers in the far distance.

It's not a great bike either.

It's my opinion that standover height clearance is not important only in the case of a pure road bike . If you intend to use the bike more like a light commuter clearance is more important as you will be coming to a full stop way more frequently and is very annoying to hit your balls everytime you do so

I sanded out a fisheye from the clear coat on my steel frame bicycle with 2000 grit sandpaper, but I was careless and removed more clear coat than I intended. Both parts in that picture are steel - just poorly labled. The one on the right was used with aluminum *hoods*, so it has a smaller (still steel) spring due to not needing to support as much weight.
