Guys,
What's the difference between a road, drive, avenue, line, street, lane, and boulevard?
Maybe a boulevard is separated lanes in either direction? I used to think avenues ran east west but this isn't true either.

Drive is a politically correct euphemism for caging

Avenue runs north south

Line is like the IRT or BMT, somewhat archaic but acceptable parlance

Street runs east west

Lane is for those weird little roads in Tribeca and stuff, with sketchy restaurants on them

Boulevards only exist in Queens, a lot of hit and runs and drunk cagers there. Careful on a boulevard, very dangerous

Avenues are typically arterial roads through a city, typically multiple lanes in either direction and often separated by a barrier

Well, if you want to get pedantic avenues are about 28° off geographic north, so we could say uptown/downtown if it makes you happy. But most people are fine treating them interchangeably

Not sure what you're thinking of with "either direction"...

A road is a path between two places

Whereas a street allows movement within a built-up place

An avenue is perpendicular to a street, that's the only consistent difference

A drive is either a road for cars or a suburban street.

A lane is an small street, often an alleyway

A boulevard is a big urban road, separated by a median, intended for moving people relatively long distances within a built-up area.

None of these officially mean anything. In individual cities sometimes the planners make rules like streets east-west, avenues north-south but it varies city to city.

You've left out the only street designation that is actually consistent across the US - alleys are always, in my experience, smaller in-between streets meant for back access so people have a place to put their trash out, take deliveries, etc.

But most new places don't even have alleyways.

Road = A way of getting from A to B without having to go over open rough ground.

Drive = A road that ypu take your animals (geese, cattle, sheep etc) to market.

Avenue = A road with trees along it.

Street = A road with buildings along it in a settlement.

Lane = A path too narrow to take a vehicle along.

Boulevard = A french main street (eg in a city)

Come to Toronto, grid pattern streets and no alley ways at all. Some small streets between large buildings to serve parking garages but no alleys. I think it has to do with city zoning laws
