>>998901I guess the current increments didn't seem that much, but the difference between the steel bodied + brushed DC motor Shinkansen sets (0 / 100 Series) and the aluminium bodied + three-phase AC motor sets (300 Series onwards) were pretty big back in the 90s, which resulted in the 100 Series being completely withdrawn from the Tokaido Shinkansen in 2003 since the much slower 100 Series would get in the way of the faster trainsets.
The following are some of the basic stats for all the sets that operated on the Tokaido Shinkansen (Maximum Speed, Weight, Output / Motor Car Ratio)
0 Series : 220 km/h, 967 tons, 11,840 kW/h / 16M
100 Series: 220 km/h, 839 tons, 11,040 kW/h / 12M4T
300 Series: 270 km/h, 711 tons, 12,000 kW/h / 10M6T
500 Series: 270 km/h, 688 tons, 17,600 kW/h / 16M
700 Series: 270 km/h, 708 tons, 13,200 kW/h / 12M4T
N700 Series: 285 km/h (Increased from 270 km/h), 700 tons, 17,080 kW/h / 14M2T
