>>988967Very excellent. I'd say Moran is one of the best all-around companies in New York. I want to Maine Maritime, been with Moran through school and since I graduated. I'm in the New York fleet, pay is great, company is good about getting you off/on the boat +/- 1 day if not on the regular crew change day. Mix of a equipment, a lot of 70s and 80s era wire boats, but also brand new tractors and ATB units.
Company culture is a little weird. Excellent job security, I came in during the '08-09 downturn, and they never tied a single boat up while whole fleets were cold stacked. However, they're very slow to promote from within, opting to hire out for a new opening 75% of the time.
Can't say much about Kirby. Big corporate entity, has it's pros and cons. I can call the VP of the New York/Offshore fleet any time, he knows everybody by name.
If you're interested in getting into a new york fleet, which I recommend if only for the payscales, definitely throw an application at Moran for a mate position. If you come in as a deckhand hoping to move up the ranks, you'll be disappointed. If they don't offeryou a mate job, look to Bouchard, McAllister, Reinauer. The first two have a high turnover, so you could churn out a few years as a mate in the harbor and then try knockingon Moran's door again. Their pay is comparable (Bouchard's is highest) but the company cultures are pretty shitty (Especially Bouchard)
