I'm eyeing this guy (used Charge Mixer 8) how high should I bid on it. Pretty keen on internal hub and disc brakes. It's Medium frame which according to wiggle should fit up to 183cm (I'm 183cm/6ft). For commuting in hilly city.

Chromoly just means steel that isn't hiten, can be a lot of different things. Yeah, it's lighter than hiten though. What you really want is a decent road bike. Very rare/ over priced in Auckland. You can get something better/ cheaper on trademe by paying $80 on shipping from somewhere else if you're willing to take the risk. Auckland tax is ridiculous for road bikes. There's fuck all for sale anywhere atm, but it's worth lurking trademe.

The trek didn't sell, you could make an offer. It's nothing special, probably not that light, but it has low gearing range, is rigid and has slicks.

I need a new bike. I've been using a $200 schwinn I got 7 years ago at target to get back and forth from the train station and it's done that fine. but in the past few months I've been riding more often for exercise purposes. maybe not what you guys do, but 7-8 miles a day. the schwinn has started hurting to ride for so long now and the gears are all fucked up because I didn't do proper maintenance (I've learned my lesson).

anyway, my dad has this old bike - pic related. it's a Royal Regina, which I have found googling is a rebranding of a Superia from roughly 1970. the frame seems fine and it rides, but the wheels and tires need replacing for sure and if possible I'd like to get a more modern gear system too.

so the question is, do I put money into fixing this thing, or should I just go and get an entry-level bike of modern make? and if it's the latter, what's the best bang for your buck bike? like, the thinkpad or honda civic of bikes?

If that frame is your size and you can learn to do basic work yourself (esp. repacking the bearings and truing the wheels), then it's worth keeping. Assuming you do the work yourself, for less than $100 you can replace the tires, brake pads, freewheel (modern freewheel will make shifting much easier), and chain, and replace those mediocre plastic derailers with better parts assuming you have a nearby shop/coop with old parts.

But if you're going to have to spend extra to have a shop do all the work for you, I'd just go in and look at whatever your local shop sells in the way of basic hybrids/road bikes depending on what kind of riding you're going to do. $500-1000 will get you a reasonable new bike from a bike shop, generally with some kind of warranty or service included, which is worth paying for if you're just starting out and clueless.

I have a fair bit of experience modernizing old frames.

By modern gear system I'm assuming you mean STI style shifters(the kind on the brake levers.) First things first, how big is the casette(the number of cogs on the rear wheel) on that bike? If it's a 5 speed, which is what I'm guessing based on the year, it will not accept a larger cassette. 7 speed is the minimum for STI shifting.

If you're interested in knowing WHY, it's because of the gap between your rear wheel(known as the dropouts.) 5 speed road is 120mm, 6 and 7 road is 126mm, 8 to 11 is 130mm. Steel frames are nice and bendy so you can technically just jam in a bigger wheel, but too big a gap and the tab of metal where you bolt on the rear derailleur will angle outboard, causing it to fuck up over and over again.

So, if you have a bike that's 6-7 speed, with a drop out of 126mm, you can jam in a 8-10 speed wheel(130mm), which will cause the dropout to bend outward 2mm on each side. Not too bad, and it'll shift fine. I've personally converted a 5 speed into a 7 speed with microshift STI, but shifting was slightly wonky and I do not recommend it.

Not worth modernizing. Buy a better used bike on craigslist. The thinkpad or ef/eg civic of bicycles is a 90s race bike or a 90s rigid mtb. Post your local cl and i'll have a look.

If you still have your 7 speed with microshift and shifting is still wonky then align the fucking hanger. Shops have a tool to do it. Hangers get bent all the time anyway, it's a super common/ simple thing to do.

Of course you can use just about any bike as a general-purpose fitness bike, but some are better than others. That bike, unlike your typical road bike, is designed with a steeper seattube, on the assumption you'll be riding on the aero bars and staying in the aero tuck position practically all of the time, which is not so good if you're going to be riding in a place with stop lights and traffic, or with lots of hills, and converting it to standard drop bars won't be straightforward.

If you decide to do it, make sure the fit is good. Very good. I heard the single most important aspect of a Tri/TT bike is the fit. If the fit isn't comfy, you can damage your body and, obvious, it won't be pleasurable to ride. Unlike road bikes, the fit on a Tri/TT bike is more important and there is a smaller margin for error of what fits and what doesn't.

Anybody who wants is free to correct me, I have never done any kind of Tri/TT because of money, time, I'm a student, and I obviously don't like the idea of buying a Tri/TT bike that wasn't fit to me. .

I just need a versatile all rounder to get my ass around the city. Hauling groceries, commuting, 4 hour rides, and just taking it for joy rides. So mounts for all kinds of racks/fenders are something i really want. Wider tire clearance is nice i guess but I doubt i'll ever need anything over 32mm.
Also something bulletproof. Steel frame, can frankenstein all sorts of parts when something breaks.
But also importantly fun. Most of the time the bike is gonna be spent being flung through traffic so I don't want to get something that feels tanky like a touring bike. Something nimble and fun

open to any recs, but it's best if it's specialized/cannondale/trek/surly/all-city/salsa because its what the bike shop i work for carries.

Well ok... the wheels can still go out of true, the bearings still need grease, the seat won't be comfortable for any distance, the belts don't last for ever, they do need occasional adjustment and the tyres can still puncture.

seems that generally in Europe, when it comes to road bikes, 300 euros wont get me anything newer and higher-tier than a 5 to 8 years old Tiagra-equipped aluminum bike, and I'm lucky if the thing has seen as little use as this one, am I right?

In search for my first 'proper' road bike and looking at the CAAD12 with shimano hydraulic discs and complete 105.
Currently on sale here on the german site bike24 for 1400€. Sounds really great, since I might also want to put on a bit wider tires and go on gavel. Is the CAAD12 okay for that?

Still a bit unsure since 1400 are a lot of money since I also need pedals and shoes then.
Are there other good bikes for around 1k with 105, ideally 50/34 and 11/32, and maybe even a tad wider clearence and disc breaks?

Quick google suggests 28 mm is the maximum clearance, which is decent but not amazing.

Keep in mind you "can" ride gravel on 23, it depends a lot on the type of gravel how enjoyable (or miserable) it will be.

105 and Ultegra feel different enough that the price difference is worth it, Cannondale's spider cranks are great, and Shimano's road disc brakes really need another generation of refinement to get to the feel of their mountain bike stuff. Squeezing on the front brake was basically nothing nothing nothing OH SHIT, and the bike in general didn't feel quite as nicely balanced and agile as the Ultegra rim brake version.

Biggest problem with the CAAD12 Ultegra was that the stock brake pads are fucking trash and need immediate replacement. Dunno why Shimano ships brakes with such shitty pads. The wheels would need to be upgraded but that's typical of any bike. Shimano's hood and lever shape leaves something to be desired for me, and the front shifting is good but not ideal. If I buy it I'll probably convert it to Chorus with Neutrons.

Koolstops are great. I've found that Shimano's pads have improved significantly over the past decade or so to the point that I've moved to leaving them on when I get a new set of calipers. In the past I would immediately throw away the original pads.

Bikes suited for light touring/ road riding. Maybe a Diverge? These bikes used to be called 'sport touring' and are now called 'adventure road bikes' but at that price most of them are mech discs which really does not appeal to me. For fun rides you're not losing much compared to a pure road bike.

You COULD tour on something like that, but you'd need an expensive bikepacking setup, expensive ultralight gear or a credit card, it wouldn't be very comfortable and the wheels would very likely get fucked.

At that price you could get a jamis aurora or a fuji touring, but yes, they wouldn't be as nice to ride unloaded as a road bike. I'd definitely look at used, because you might be able to get something truly excellent like pic related, rather than a low specced compromise machine. Post your cl.

It's going to recommend crank length also. You don't need to worry about that.

Standard full size wheels for mtb are 26" 27.5" and 29".
For road and city bike it's 28" also known as 700c and sometimes 622 in euroland.

The canyon's geometry is more relaxed (more upright riding position). The rose has smooth welds. The canyon isn't all black- safer. The rose's wheels are slightly better. The canyon's tires are slightly better. The canyon is more prestigious - Movistar and Katusha on the world tour ride canyon. You'd probably get the rose sooner.

Very similar bikes. Both would be great.

Yes. I'm not durianrider and can't stand listening to the twat, but if he hates them too it proves even a stopped clock is right twice per day.
They use a shitty plastic/mild cheese sleeve bearing instead of balls, are supposed to be oil lubricated but have no seals to keep the oil in place, and the whole think is stupid beyond belief even by frog-eater "engineering" standards.

Shimano. They're nearly always a safe bet on wheels and hubs. They're heavy but soundly engineered and don't cost a lot. I bought a pair of WH-RS31 with offset rear rim, 11-spd compatible chromo freehub, cup and cone bearings and flatened spokes for about 160€ new. The WH-RS21 is slightly less and current WH-RS330 slightly more.
WH-RS81-C24-TL for 500€ if you're weight concious or just like carbon.

If you're spending much more than that I'd suggest going for a hand built set instead of system wheels, but for the money it's excellent. Hand built (by me) with 32/32 clyde spoking was my upgrade path but in hindsight it was just a feel-good because-I-can upgrade.

How cold is cold? Snow/slush on the ground? Ride a cyclocross or MTB with studded tires if the condition is icy, but for regular old snow knobblies will do.

Bundle up, protect the face hands and feet in particular. When I ride in the winter I look like one of those ay-rab women, plus a pair of untinted riding glasses so every inch of my skin is covered.

Not him, but your best bet is to grab a cheap old mountain bike (lower center of gravity is preferable when riding on ice) and throw winter tires on it. If you live somewhere that doesn't see persistent ice, Conti's Top Contact Winter tires are fantastic and much cheaper than studded tires.

You may be interested to learn that the Bafang motor it comes with is available in conversion kits for relatively reasonable prices. So for the price of that piece of shit you wanted, you can get a real bike with a much better motor & battery.

Still, looks like pretty good condition & value from what little we can see. It's a nice little bonus that it comes with conti GP4000s. Would normally expect somewhat cheaper tires on a low-midrange Spesh. Also nice that the shifters are not the old crappy thumb-lever Sora.

I believe the saddle is a Specialized Romin.
It's quite popular with a lot of riders. It is an excellent saddle, but you will have to spend some time getting used to it and finding the right position for it to be comfortable. This is a gradual and ongoing process for all cyclists.

A coworker is asking me to help them buy their girlfriend a bike and I mostly want to point them in the right direction and wash my hands of it.

I'm compiling some info to send to them, but I want to run it buy you guys.

Height: probably 5'9
Weight: close to 300 iirc, will probably have a bag and some things to carry.
Purpose: commuting ~5 miles, no elevation change more than 3%, decently paved.
Budget on the lower end: Probably between $400-600.

Things I know I'm telling them:
They want an upright commuter sort of geometry.
Be ready to repair/replace more parts, learn to replace your own spokes.
Wheels should be minimum 32 spokes, preferably 36 spokes.

Things I need to know:

Is there any point in considering anything aluminum?
What other components are going to wear out faster?
What sort of pressure should she run her tires at?
Do smaller tires have a better weight capacity than larger ones?

For starters the Granite has a carbon fork and Spyre brake calipers. So that's a hell of a lot better spec than the other one.

The geometry of the Granite is also a bit slacker, and has a higher slightly higher bottom bracket and longer wheelbase. I think it is better suited to your needs than the CX, which has geometry that would be best suited to riding in a a pack or peloton.

A bike is only as fast as it's rider.

Hitting up your local craigslist is never a bad idea, when looking for a bike. If you don't find anything nice there, time to check your lbs's, but this is also why it's a good idea to check in in craigslist regularly even if you don't really need a new bike, just in case someone happens to post a good deal.
Third is to consider buying online.

Depends on how nice of a commuter you want. Entry level Claris/Sora road bike can be bought from €400 new every once in a while. A local chain has a regularly recurring "sale" on some Merida for that much.
A nicer bike with Tiagra/105 or Apex/Rival, better kit all around and a few kilos less is more expensive. Twice as much, about.

Nothing. Decent entry level frame. Decent entry level wheels. Nice pedals. Crappy clitshifter Sora group. Unless you're planning to replace the groupset I wouldn't go for it. You'll either end up overspending on a decent bike with a crappy groupset, or underpaying your friend for what is a nice bike with a single flaw.
Don't buy from friends.

If you absolutely must have it, you'll have to judge by yourself how much of an issue the few gears and thumb-operated clit-shifters drag the value down. And find a decent way of explaining to your friend why the value is so much lower than it "should" be without making him feel ripped off.
Keep in mind that a brand spanking new 2016 Claris Trek/Cannondale is €500.

£150 is about €200, isn't it? That's the absolute most I'd pay for it, but again, there's probably no shortage of people who'd pay more and you risk looking like you ripped your friend off. A Cannondale H-400 just popped up for sale in my area. Does anyone have experience with these bikes? As far as I can tell from the pictures all the components seem original and I think it's from 1996. I know Cannondale was doing cool things with aluminum back in the day but I was just a wee lad then. I plan to ride it for commuting and doing things around town.

Also, while I'm looking at older relatively cheap bikes, what are some signs that it's stolen rather than someone just trying to get rid of a bike that's been sitting in the back of their garage? Some bikes I've seen have almost suspiciously low price tags.

For older used bikes...

Miyata, Centurion, Panasonic, Bridgestone, Univega(some now dead department store's house brand for Miyata-built bikes), Nishiki, Lotus, Shogun

I would probably kill for a 3Rensho, or a Bontrager Race Lite.

depends on your skill level. Modern Ultegra is most anyone will ever need, even then modern 105 groupsets are pretty good.

If you're willing to spend the money on dura ace, just get ultegra and a good power meter. You'll benefit much more
