I've had cars follow me, see how close they can get to me, actually bump me on purpose once, hit me twice by 'accident' (Both ran away), turn they're lights off and rev their engine when they see us coming at night, I've had bottles thrown on me, both open and closed, and countless shouts of abuse, and for what? I fucking laugh.
So, yeah, you can see how that grudge builds.
Not every motorist is a cager, but every cager is a motorist, so it's easy to think we hate all cars.
