Why aren't trains automated yet? Aren't almost all of the derailments a result of operator error?

You wouldn't even need partial/complete automation, just automatically limit the speed of the train so it doesn't fucking tip over...

No, a lot of them are from track defects.

The ones that are operator error are usually from going over a derail at slow speed or from switching mistakes. So it's one car on the ground and they can often just be pulled back onto the rail.
