so i got this rigid 80s mtn bike and i have huge expanses of abandoned rail road in my area. how can i mod the bike so its comfortable?

0. Why do you assume you can or should be comfortable during strenuous physical activity?

.5. railbeds are shitty riding.

1. Start by running your tires at a lower pressure. Typically tires & rims on an old rigid mtb will get down to 25psi safely, and as low as 20psi risking pinch flats

2. Learn to ride in attack position. Keep your knees flexed, your grip loose, and your upper body relaxed to absorb shocks. You may need to build some basic fitness with normal riding before you can do this all the time.

3. Get MTB bar-ends. The extra hand positions will help.

i had the idea of getting one of those shit tier hyper springy seats from walmart but for those saying to get a fatbike i just dont got the cash. i am trying to do thins as cheap as possible.

I had one of those. I did nothing except make me sea sick, and occasionally require a field repair.
You'd be much better off just hardening up, learn dynamic riding posture and letting your legs act as suspension.

Some good grips and some comfortable padded gloves might help improve comfort.
I'd suggest some foam grips like the Ritchey WCS, and Giro Bravo fingerless gloves, which i use and have noticed seem to have improved my ride comfort on this type of shaky terrain.

Some cheap toe cages and straps might also marginally improve ride quality.

Talk to a bikefitter to get advice on saddle and grips, make sure saddle height/angle are right, ride good tires at fairly low pressure

Measure frame for tire width 80s mtb can probably handle something like 2.3"

Warning: Rhynolites are a bitch to put tires on. Do not buy wire-bead tires to use with them, they would be a nightmare to install.
