Lads, I have a MTB that I love dearly but I want more speed (and don't care about comfort much). It honestly feels like the bike itself is a limiting factor at this point (I squat a lot).

Can I replace it's stock wheels/tires with road bike wheels/tires? Should I get bigger gears?

I mainly ride packed trails with roots and stones + city commute (lots of jumping to and fro curbs).

Sounds like the limiting factor isn't so much your muscles as it is your brain

Ever consider a bike computer? Sometimes "feels like I'm going really fast" is rather different from "going fast". If you just want to feel like you're going fast, ride through gridlock traffic, you'll feel like a badass. If you want to actually fast, obstacles are generally not going to help with that.

Are you spinning out in top gear? If so then you'll need faster gearing.

A flat bar road bike will have the gear ratios that you need to go faster and will be able to handle the packed trails and city commuting that you mentioned.

Flat bar road bikes also have provisions for a rack and panniers which will give you somewhere to store and carry your oats.

Actually some 26" frames can fit 700c wheels with narrowish tyres (like 28mm, possibly more).

Kirk Pacenti is trying to launch the idea of comfort gravel racers in cooperation with Panasonic, with 584 wheels and fat slicks for your 622 gravel racer.

My 26" wheels with 2.0 tyres were a bit too wide, plenty of room on the height though. I think this frame and fork has clearance for 40mm in 700c which is just under 1.6" but with how inaccurate inch measurements are I'd probably have to go with 1.5 at the most just to be safe.

Hey OP, you need a cyclocross bike. Drop bars. Shorter wheelbase. 32c tires. The handling will give you that fast steering that you will like. And the drop position will give you the aero you need

You can stick the larger tyres on a flat bar bike too and the bars will give greater control off road and for shit like hopping curbs.

He's refering to those god-awful carbon blade spoked abortions. All the mathematical and geometrical beauty that makes a tension spoked wheel so resilient is here cast aside and they pretty much made a cartwheel. Out of carbon. That disintegrated on impacts.

Actually the failures were due to manufacturing faults, some of the later ones were fixed and no longer dangerous in the same way (I personally wouldn't ride them as I wouldn't trust Spinergy not to fuck up somewhere else). If you didn't know it was due to the rivets that secured the spokes on opposite sides of the rim creating a weak spot.

Dunno, perhaps it's for aerodynamics, perhaps it's to maintain lateral stiffness.

The spokes are like those of a regular wheel, they actually come from each side of the hub and meet at the rim in a triangular shape, the rivet holds them together at the tip even though they're bonded to the rim. You could remove the rivet and it would still be one piece, however there's a chance it would split apart.

If you don't trust your bond, you shouldn't be bonding shit in the first place. If the bond fails that rivet ain't doing shit other than providing a sweet stress concentrator for catastrophic fracture to occur at.

Also, these wheels had whirlmode flutter at speed. Aeroelasticity is a bitch.

Anyone who has even an inkling of an understanding of the properties of carbon fiber (particularly the anisotropic nature of woven sheets of it) will instinctively flinch upon looking at a Spinergy Rev X wheel. Basically a rolling dumpster fire of a design.

it's called a flat bar road bike. you know those triangles that bicycles are made out of? they don't just create them willy nilly; they actually have a geometry and purpose to them in affecting how the bike performs. it's crazy, but there's actual engineering behind bikes and how they're designed around these triangles. throwing a flat bar on a tri bike doesn't make it a hybrid, just like throwing road bars on a dh bike doesn't make it a hybrid.

Road tires are an easy, cheap swap, within the width limits of your rims. Wheel swap probably won't help enough for you to care.

It's probably not worth it.

Flat bar road bike is a doubly idiotic idea. You need an aero position for serious flat ground speed. And it's got the same durability issues a regular road bike would have on jumping curbs.

I can understand not wanting to jump to and fro curbs on a monocoque carbon road bike frame but surely an aluminium frame could handle that menial level of abuse, especially one with sturdy wheels and 28+ mm tyres.

A big chainring will be well into the speed range where it's full retard to use a flat bar. Given the costs, you're probably better off with an entirely different bike.

The main difference between you and me is that I gave OP an option, but all you did was try to shoot down my option and you didn't offer OP any other options.
