Yes, that's actually a very good deal considering SF prices.

Keep in mind that it's a large bike though, possibly XL. Riding a bike that doesn't fit is an exercise in misery.

Can you explain the 90's rigid mtb meme? I rarely go on this board but have already seen it. I was considering one of these but I'd prefer this one assuming it's lighter/easier to ride around town.

I'm 6'3", maybe with short legs. I'll double check but I thought the 23" would fit well?

90s MTBs were mass produced in Japan and Taiwan, all looked more or less the same regardless of brand.

They were tough, reliable, 2 to 5 pounds heavier than a comparable roadbike of the era. Not particularly comfortable to ride, because of the insanely long top tube. They were also below average in climbing agility due to their longish chainstays.

Parts are cheap to replace, 7 speed cassettes are widely available for 10 bucks, 7 speed chains for 5. Derailleurs are typically free at your local co-op, as shimano shat out millions and millions of them.

In short, if the 9 0 S R I G I D M T B were a gun, it would be the type of gun you'd want in the zombie apocalypse. Not the most powerful, the most accurate, or the lightest. It's durable as fuck all, and ammunition for it is cheap and plentiful.

90s rigid mtbs are good, durable, versatile, cheap, easy-to-maintain bikes. With semislicks they make great commuters. Not appealing to thieves yet they ride well, so they're good for when you need something to lock up for a while. They also generally have pretty standardized components so they're easy to get replacement parts for.

Well, you asked if it was a good deal. IMO what determines a good deal is the resale value; if you can sell something for more than what you paid for it, it's an amazing deal.

If your commute requires you to lock up outside, I would say this bicycle is not ideal for your needs. That thing is a prime target for theft.

probably another moronic question, but are the slight differences in chainstay length and seating position enough of a stability difference to make mounting knobbly tires on a road bike a bad idea? Since I don't actually participate in cx I don't necessarily need the differing weight and top tube.

I had an AL Redline Conquest and the cross geometry (short top tube, fast steering) was bumpy and twitchy on fast road rides. I swapped the frame with a (steel) Bianchi Cross Project USA and the ride became all-day comfortable.

Also I'm afraid to clamp a rack onto a carbon frame, and having a rear rack and a large saddle bag in the wet/cold months is so convenient for not needing a backpack/camelbak/shoulder bag for extra clothing, big tail light, fender, etc.

The carbon/ultegra Redline is more tech, very likely 2 lbs or more lighter, but for someone who's not going to race cx, I think the Bianchi is a more comfortable and practical.

Two negatives are:
The campy drivetrain has fewer options for low (climbing) gearing.
The Bianchi uses the older quill stem - fewer stem choices and more labor swapping the stem because you'll have to remove a brake lever and re-wrap the bars.

Get a road bike with endurance geometry (ie. more upright like a hybrid). You'll appreciate the extra responsiveness, speed, and choice of hand positions on the bars of a road bike over a hybrid.

Unless you're a gymnast riding nothing but glass smooth asphalt, road bikes are not even approaching comfortable, no matter what paid articles will try to convince you. The extra responsiveness, speed and choice of hand positions won't help you when the razor thin tires and bent posture make your ass, wrists, back and neck hurt an hour or two after leaving home.
For long relaxed rides you want an upright position and fat tires. You won't get as far for a given time but you'll enjoy those hours that much more.

Many types of road bikes have wider tires and a more upright riding position; a Sam Hillborne is a road bike, as is a Breezer Uptown, a CAAD12, and a fucking Bakfiets.

I looked for used bikes locally and found nothing that would really fit both my wants or my budget. Funny enough, I hadn't seen the XCalibur 6 in any catalog, and the guy at the shop said that's because it's been dropped for the current model year. It's pretty well established that used bikes are usually worth less than the sum of their parts. To me, a good deal is a bike that you could resell for the same price, without having to chop.

On paper, grip shifters were developed because SRAM wanted a way to shift without taking your hand off the bars. IMO this is a case of inventing a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.

I suspect the -real- reason is because they wanted grip shifters to mimic motorcycle throttles. Yuck.

However, I do think there is a sweetspot in the $1,200-1,500 range. My LBS has a few clearance CAAD10 equipped with 11 speed 105 for $1,100. IMO that's superior to a Tarmac with Ultegra 6700, which would fetch a similar price on craigslist.

Actually, the truth is even more horrifying: Grip Shift was originally designed for triathletes, they were the only shifters that could fit on the funky aerobars that were popular in the late 80's.

The major bicycle manufacturer's are all more or less on par.

I usually suggest that riders pick the bike that they like the most aesthetically. A bike that you personally find beautiful/cool/sharp-looking will get ridden more.

I think bang for buck, if you can find a Giant Defy on clearance that would be ideal. Giant tends to have slightly cheaper MSRP on bikes with equal drivetrain parts. But again, if I were you I would splurge an extra hundo or so for a bike that looks cooler and not feel ripped off. Colors are important too.

The only "endurance" bike I've ever ridden that was noticeably better was the Infinito CV, which is way above entry level (frameset is $3500) and doesn't have the most relaxed geo. Accelerates and handles like a good racer should, but has the same comfy feel on shit roads as my Miyata 615 with 32mm tires. I really wanna buy one, but I'm saving money for other shit right now.

The Volagi bikes look pretty neat but I haven't had the chance to try one out.

Bikes that run 6-7 speed cassettes have 126mm rear dropout spacing. 8-11 speed wheels have 130mm. It fits, but you have to jam it in. Don't even try with 5 speed bikes.

Alternatively if you're a poorfag, you can buy microshift 7 speed brake/shifters for $50, a 7 speed uniglide cassette for $8, new brake cables and housing for a few bucks.

Le Tours are very durable bikes, although quite heavy. I owned one that still weighed around 26 pounds as a fixie, so stock it would have been comfortably over 30lb.

It's pretty close to the ideal commuter, nobody would bother to steal it if you locked it up properly. The frame will probably never break unless a car runs it over or you throw it off a bridge.

If you want modern STI, you need 130mm rear dropout spacing. 7 speed STI from the late 80s is 126mm. You can make a 130mm rear wheel fit into a 126mm dropout but it's a very tight fit.

Only way to tell for sure is to see the bike in person and check how big the spacing is yourself.

My experience is it's an easy fit if the stays are bendy enough. I put a 135mm in a 127mm without an issue once. It was stupid but it worked

I think it's tight relative to a 130mm hub going into 130mm spacing, which just drops right in. 130mm into 126mm I always have to push a bit to get it to slide in.

If you are going to buy STIs anyways, maybe consider doing a drop-bar conversion on a rigid MTB

Here's a bikeforums thread that might convince you.

rigid MTB is the cheapest option in the used market, and for winter/commuting fat tires are great

As other anons have mentioned, putting a new rear wheel will require spreading the frame (going from 120 to 130 I'd definitely want to respace the frame and realign the dropouts, not just cram in a wheel), but there are a few other issues:
this bike uses the obsolete 27" wheelsize, unless you're willing to build new hubs into 27" rims you're going to have to source longer reach brake calipers to work with 700c wheels.
And the front hub is probably 90mm, not the more modern 100mm width, so going to 700c wheels on this bike will be even more complicated.

Half the reason I want to get another bike is for the project of upgrading it. I don't anything outside of basic bike maintenance and I thought upgrading something old would be a fun way to learn.

Bending out the rear of the frame does seem a bit beyond me (well, actually bending it with a 2x4 is straightforward but getting the dropouts aligned is another thing).

I'll have to look around for a slightly more modern frame.

considering that it's probably a conversion bike, it will likely have a mounting bracket for a rear derailleur but taking into account how the so called hipsters demolished every conversion bike by sawing off the mounting brackets it might be hard to say, either way you will probably be able to add internal hub gearing if all els fails.

Looking at this Shogun Ninja. Googling indicates that it's 1991ish I think. It has a Shimano 105 groupset, 7 on the cassette. The advertisement claims 8/9/10 speed compatibility on the hub, but 90s shimano 105 7 speed is 126mm right? 8/9/10 are all 130mm? I guess it's a steel frame so it could be spaced.

Advertisement also claims that pretty much everything is new. Cassette, bottom bracket, cables, etc. How much do you think this thing is worth?

Look at the frame front and back to verify it's not crash damaged, verify that all the moving parts turn freely (ignore issues with consumables), wheels should be reasonably close to true, and take a 5mm hex wrench along so you can verify that the seatpost isn't stuck.

126mm dropouts, 130mm hub. 2mm on each side, it'll be snug but you can use the two together without having to coldset(bend the rear triangle.)

I've converted dozens of 6 speeds into 8/9/10 speed. When you install the rear wheel you just have to lightly push apart the dropouts, the hub will slide right in.

Is there even a collector's market for these? I can definitely see somebody paying 4500 for a Potts with matching custom stem and bar setup, but that bike is pretty ordinary as early MTBs go.
