If I'm not near a Super Wawa and it gets to be around eight or nine or so, I am not going to be able to get gas until like 6AM tomorrow.

no part of oregon allows you to pump your own gas

there were many times growing up there I would run extremely low or get stranded at night because the pumps were off

the worst is when you are in the boonies and the only gas station in town is shut down because the owner got too drunk on the lake the night before to come into work

lots of farmers would have their own tanks so if you were a local it wasn't a huge deal but you were SOL as a visitor

Why not take old cars and keep them running?
1. Cars in the 90s and early 00s don't have too many electrics so they don't break down often, making them better for the environment because new parts don't have to be produced, and no new cars either
2. The making of batteries is extremely damaging to the environment.
3. The big curb weight of electrical cars makes them less practical and economical
4. Even if you don't use gas electricity doesn't appear out of thin air. Different sources of electricity all have their pros and cons, but none of it is perfect.
The only argument against combustion engines is that oil may be running out someday, but that's an issue of its own.

They have to be put somewhere and maintained. I doubt you're willing to chop down forests for it, and I don't think putting them somewhere in the desert is an alternative at least for europe.
The latter power is just not enough to power the society along with all existing cars (and if we go that way, busses, trains and the likes, too)

I would never live somewhere that doesn't have 24 hour gas stations and I don't even live in the city. Around the corner we have a 24 hour 711 and down the hill a Walgreens that closes at 12 and a Mcdonalds that is 24 hours. We also have a 24 hour diner, amd two nearby gas stations that are 24 hours.

Actually this is a legitimate concern. In the past 5 years we've had blizzards, hurricanes, and power outages in various areas.

One rural part of my county had a whole street that went about a mile be completey blocked off and without power for a week after a "tornado" storm. So many branches from trees fell on the power lines and on the road that they were fucked.

Hurricane Sandy was nearby ish and that was an issue for those people with flooding and power outages.

We had one of the worst winters past year that most people made sure to have a full tank of gas because the roads were bad and a gas station stop would have been difficult. No worries of charging or not being able to get going with a full tank sitting in the car.

You need to go back to the early 1970s to find cars free from electronics (spark coils, distributors with mechanical points and vacuum advance, etc...) Even then there were some electronics for fuel injection.
By 1991 California required new cars to have diagnostic computers to detect defective smog controls and by 1996 these were formalized into the OBD-II standard.
1990s and later cars don't get repaired, they have components replaced one by one until there are no more diagnostic scanner error codes.
