Motorcycles have much lower centers of gravity than bicycles, and the tires are much wider and rounder. On a racing bike, they'll also be much stickier. To get this effect on a downhill bike, find a way to attach 600 lbs of lead to a fatbike.

Search youtube for gravity bikes. I'm also running 50 mm semislicks on 30 mm rims and it feels super grippy when doing quite cool leans. Too bad I'm too tall so with my big frame I can't get the centre of gravity too low. And I'm too scared test the limits when the saddle is at well above 1 meter height.

Maybe very hot weather with super hot tarmac would also help to get the max grip. Also: don't forget to install dropper post to your road bike!

Wait so you only counter-steer at the very start of the turn or when you're adjusting, the rest of the cornering is just leaning?
I always thought I couldn't get the hang of it but if that's the case I've always just done it instinctually.

I haven't really taken much notice as I do it instinctively but I believe that counter steering is just to initiate the lean, the you turn slightly in the direction you're going. If you kept counter steering then you'd start going the other direction (or drifting if you skidded the rear wheel). Also counter steering only works when you're going over a certain speed, I think it's about 15mph. If you're going slow enough then you just turn the way you want to go.

Besides you don't even need to get the tires as hot as on a motorbike. That's because the bike is much lighter than a motorbike so you could use much softer tires that are grippier. You'd need specially constructed tires for this but I bet getting a knee down would be doable. The only problem I could see is that a bike doesn't have much for you to hold on. On a motorbike you've got the tank and engine to support your body with the leg that's not dragging.

I've noticed this works the best, at least on dry asphalt. Lean your bike and not yourself. During winters in snow I tend to do the opposite and lean my body in more while keeping the bike more upright.

this thread gets made pretty frequently and no one ever points out that motorbikes riders are much closer to the ground so of course their knees scrape when they lean

The superior grip of motorcycle tires and suspension also allow about a 5degree higher max lean angle

You aren't getting the centripetal force a sport bike gets due to a much slower speed. Mix that with suspension-less road bikes (any sort of bounce mid-corner would kill you) and their weak as fuck toothpick tire sidewalls, and you get a dangerous situation.

Sportbike (motorcycle) tires are designed in a bulbous fashion for leaning and are thicker for torsional stability. Road bike tires are not.

You could lean a bike that far if you were hauling ass downhill and had wider tires made for a motorcycle, but it would be weird because you have way less weight on the bike.

Stick with it, it has a very slow start and often not much happens in a single episode. Not DBZ slow but it has a lot of filler.

The interschool race is much more interesting.

Deliberate counter steering is unnecessary on a bicycle, pedaling, and the steering inputs to correct for pedaling create enough instability to start a turn. It's necessary on a motorcycle because you have a very heavy bike with a balanced engine.

Or a velodrome, for that matter.

It's not hard to get a crazy lean on a velodrome, especially if you go high up on the banks. A bit scary at speed on the concrete velodrome I used to hit up late at night after work but not actually hard at all.
