I want to buy new Cannondale bike, there is rim brakes and disc brakes options for the same series (Synapse) which one should I pick?

(I'm commuting, flat city no hills, maybe I go for a ride in rain or snow, long 100+ miles ride)

Disc brakes have better weather resistance and, in most cases, more stopping power. They are still easy to service, but can't beat the simplicity of rim brakes. The drawback is entry level disc brake sets are harder to modulate than more traditional setups. High end hydraulics are better tuned and suffer less from this.

I'm a mountain biker, so take it with a pinch of salt, as I value brake grip that'll put me over the bars and quick cooling over ease of use, as I do most of my braking going down steep trails

You get better braking power on the disc but from personal experience it's a lot easier to service rim brakes so if you plan on doing your own bike maintenance then pick the rim, if you send it to a shop then go for the disc.

I forgot to mention, rim brakes do not stop effectively if the rim is out of true, so if you take your bike off of a lot of curbs on your rides, hit nasty potholes, cracked path, etc, you might consider disc.

To me, it sounds like either would suit you fine. Your ride isn't demanding enough to really put an emphasis on braking, and neither can be called a bad choice.

Another thing to consider when comparing disc and rim brakes is the axles. If the bike doesn't have thru axles I'd take rim brakes. With thru axles discs are the obvious choice. If you're buying a thru axle road bike make sure the rear axle is 142 mm which is the standard rear TA. Some manufacturers have used 135 mm TAs in their road bikes and finding new wheels for those is practically impossible.

As someone who has riden in rain with rim brakes I think I'd rather have discs. Though I haven't tried discs so I can't really make the comparison.
But my rim brakes wear incredibly fast in the rain and leave sludge all over the braking surface (rim) of the wheel which then acts as a sort of lubricant and makes braking really ineffective. Then there's the associated squeal when they dry.
My understanding is that discs don't suffer from that problem.

Rim brakes are possibly more susceptible to brake rub when cornering hard as the wheel or frame flexes under load.

I would go caliper if I was never ever going to sell it.

Kool stop pads will make your caliper brakes awesome for $15. If you go disc, you'll need to by TRP Spyres or something to replace the shit this bike is coming with (like >>999681 said)

Disc brakes. Your rims will last forever when they're not being used as a braking surface - otherwise you have to replace them once every year or two. In the wet and snow there's no question which will stop you faster.

Only exception is if you want to enter any races. If racing, even small local races, you must have rim brakes. Fuck the UCI.

Happens to me every every year or two, usually during the winter since the bad conditions wear a lot harder. Brakes will start pulsing when gripped and the brake track will noticeably have a curved bowl shape to it. I've let it get so bad before that the rim literally buckled when I used a plastic tire lever on it.

You don't get any more 'stopping power' from discs on road bikes. The advantage to discs on road bikes is the increased modulation that discs give you, you have a better sense of where the limit of tire traction is.

Discs on road bikes are very nice but not a deal breaker.

Seconded, but only as long as we're talking alu rims in dry, warm conditions. Rain or ice and carbon rims, and they're more of a baby air raid siren than a brake.

Aluminum rim brakes have plenty of stopping power in wet/rainy conditions, carbon rims are rims that have a delay until the pad starts working

OP is neither going to be using carbon rims or racing on this bike so its not an issue to get the discs even for riding in wet/sloppy conditions
