Then there is also faster trains which cost even more.
I am a university student and I pay ~275 € every semester. That includes a ticket which allows me to use all public transit except for fast trains and long-distance busses in the whole state and beyond.
The state is about the size of Maryland IIRC and has a population of 17 million.
