Each answer is horrible because even if they're not officially slaves, lack of government resources and support means children born into poverty are at the mercy of the free market in a country.

But it's still an important question because if they're not slaves, the unregulated cobalt trade isn't at fault; lack of government intervention in the economy is.

Customers of electric car companies aren't responsible for the business practices of the manufacturers of the products they purchase. Not legally, not ethically, and in my opinion not morally.

Do you know who is responsible? The parents of those children. The managers that hire those children. The governments of the countries that turn a blind eye to exploitative child labor. Though, maybe I just phrased that wrong - I meant to say this is fake news *because* this cobalt isn't used for electric cars. It might be used for computers and phones though - which is where the vast majority of cobalt goes towards anyways.

Besides, if you wanna see what non-electric cars do to in terms of blood-diamond'esque crap, go read up on the Nigerian refineries and how the Shell corporation has become its own defacto government complete with military force there. (And don't get me started on what chocolate does to chocolates.)

Those child miners will grow into responsible adults with a worker ethic heavily ingrained into them. I'd say that's something that's missing among a lot of american children. A good working ethic.
