Asymptomatic infections are a thing anon. In any case, being individually able bodied does not easily apply to everybody else. And, reducing contact between people is the best chance at mitigating the spread of the virus. Who knows who has it, considering US testing rates are abysmal right about now? Why take the chance, or allow others to do so and thus prolong the epidemic?

Where is it said that the governors of certain states give special permission to big enterprises? I don't know what you talk of to begin with.

Certain industries would do much better if they were public instead of private.
For example: gambling, car towing
Gambling is used to launder money often. By seizing the means of wagering and opening the books to public scrutiny (why not?) It would be rather easy for anyone with an interest in statistics to determine who was laundering money
Car towing is basically Mafia in most places. Not only are they one of the only privately held businesses that are given the permission to take others property at-will and ransom it, it is also a commonly utilized vehicle (lol get it?) for money laundering as well.. there exists gangs that traffic drugs and use vehicles for payment or drug delivery.
This is a very convenient process when the payment / drug vehicle can simply be parked somewhere and then towed away legally without anyone asking any questions or any paperwork with the DMV showing a sale

As far as shareholder liability, fuck yes. Call it regulation, IDC. A shareholder should not just be liable for the price of their stock and any risk they may take with its devaluation but they should also be criminally liable for any actions and organization takes on their behalf. Those who voted for whatever action was the cause of criminal tort should be directly responsible for its results

I dig it too. Nowadays it's just a bunch of shareholders at the helm of corporations it seems. The issue I see though is enforcing control over them. It will be a pain to figure out who votes for what, though I wish it weren't. We'll figure it out sometime.

That is a matter of record, and if one stays on a board that repeatedly votes to do harm to society, it's a simple matter to sell and bail. H&R block, or whatever investment firm he uses, is the real factor encouraging that without considering consequences, just using his money.

...and I'm probably guilty of doing a lot of harm the same way, as I don't do my own investing either. What little I do is through mutual funds, and god knows what the high rollers are doing with that relative pittance I tossed into their collective wad.

As for figuring it out, it is rather hampered by the fact that the government is entirely beholden to the bottom line. It's a hard ask to get them to do anything that may slow the investment economy.

Chernobyl, Fukushima etc. Nuclear is relatively safe, but when it fails it fails big time. What makes you say this? Is it that book you mentioned? From what I read from a summary it talks about consuming less instead of producing more energy - clean or otherwise, AFAIK. Now I know summaries aren't everything, but why not both? China produces more goods that get exported for sale, than not. It seems the onus is on the US instead.

It's easy to cover one eye and ignore the catch-22 for what it is, but self-perpetuating problems that came about as a result of endless competition and have existed for this long, never have simple solutions that don't end in death. Otherwise, they would have been fixed well before anyone here was born.

This is as much a problem inherent to mankind as it is to all life, we've just gotten very creative in propping it up, so life can escape its bounds. But we're finding that there are still physical limitations we've not yet found a way to bypass, and at least a few, we may never be able to.

So, whether you interpret it as learned hopelessness or continuously aiming for our dreams, we repeat the cycle, even as reality continues to tell us "No!" at every turn, but once in a blue Armstrong moon, says "Yes".
