In early October last year, American intelligence received convincing evidence that Putin had decided on a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the goal of which was to capture Kiev - the "mother of Russian cities" and the center of Orthodoxy, as well as control about 2/3 of the territory of Ukraine.
Massed air strikes on cities were not planned. Military control centers, ammunition depots and military equipment would be hit by cruise and tactical ballistic missiles.
All this would be carried out under the guise of a powerful propaganda campaign to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, the deployment of missiles on its territory capable of reaching Moscow in 5-7 minutes, and, of course, the protection of the “oppressed” Russian-speaking population. After that, a puppet pro-Putin government would be installed in Kiev on the bayonets of the Russian army.
The preparations for the invasion were disguised as large-scale exercises on the territory of the Russian Federation and Belarus, which take place every year. But this time they would become a springboard for throwing into Ukraine.
The date of occurrence for the month of February was chosen for a reason. This, of course, had nothing to do with the ease of movement of heavy military equipment on frozen ground. Only "couch experts" can judge so.
It's just statistically the coldest month in Europe. And the calculation was that, under the threat of a complete cessation of the supply of Russian gas, which is up to 30% of the EU's energy balance, completely discourage the desire of the Europeans to stand up for Ukraine.
