After much delay, Huddersfield’s ‘game-changing’ bus station is closer to being realised, as new plans await approval.

In October 2022, initial proposals for the town's refurbished bus station, complete with a living grass roof, cycle hub, upgraded shops and new facilities were discussed following a round of consultation.

Back then, the scheme was projected to cost £20m, with the majority of this coming from the government’s Transforming Cities Fund through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Earlier timescales would have seen the revamped station up and running by the end of next year, with an application expected to be put in during the summer of 2023. However, this never came to fruition.

The scheme, which is being carried out between WYCA and Kirklees Council, has been split across two phases. The first is mainly concerned with giving the interior of the bus station a ‘complete revamp’ with new tiles and flooring, seating and better shop fronts among the changes.
