President-elect Donald Trump joked on social media — as he reportedly did in person — that Canada is a state and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is a governor.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada. I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT,” Trump posted on Truth Social, his social media network.
The remark comes after Trump’s threat to impose 25% tariffs on both Canada and Mexico over illegal immigration and fentanyl. The leaders of both countries have held talks with Trump — Trudeau in person, Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum by phone — to avert those levies.
The talks have in both circumstances been reported as cordial but without having reached agreement.
On “Meet the Press” over the weekend, Trump said the U.S. was “subsidizing” those countries due to the trade deficits it runs — $50 billion so far in goods this year with Canada, $142 billion with Mexico, according to Commerce Department data. “If we’re going to subsidize them, let them become a state,” Trump said.
Trudeau has said that while the tariffs would be “devastating” for Canada they would impose real hardships on Americans, too.
