The number of Walgreens, Duane Reade, CVS and Rite Aid stores across the city shrunk to 395 locations in 2024. That’s versus 435 last year, and down sharply from a peak of 656 in 2014, according to The Center for an Urban Future’s annual report titled “State of the Chains.”
Locals blame recent changes to the law where offenders are detained then released back onto the streets often within the same day.

With competition killed, CVS/Walgreens downsize/lower the quality of their services to make more profit. This enshittification is why you might have a store with only one cashier or pharmacist handling absolutely everything even as profit doubles, or why pharmacy deserts are now a thing (local pharmacy closes down because of above, CVS/Walgreens do not move in because it wouldn't be profitable enough). This is why it's been taking longer to get prescriptions fulfilled and been a rise in wrongful prescriptions (see
