Amid President Donald Trump’s blitzkrieg of controversies during his first not-even-a-month in office, it can be difficult to separate the scandal from the mere provocation.
What we have with the Trump Justice Department in New York City is the seeds of a scandal.
To recap: After the Justice Department signaled an intent to drop its corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams (D), multiple prosecutors resigned rather than carry out that order. At least seven resigned in total.
The ones who have spoken publicly said the justifications offered by acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, Trump’s former defense lawyer, were nonsensical and have suggested this could amount to a political quid pro quo - the Trump administration dropping the charges in exchange for Adams participating in Trump’s illegal-immigration crackdown in his city.
