Those of us who are old enough remember “Baghdad Bob,” the colorful (and later iconic) spokesman for Iraq and President Saddam Hussein during Desert Storm.
Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf, the Minister of Information, would blatantly lie about the war — in one instance insisting that the allied forces hadn’t even reached Baghdad while bombs exploded behind him and tanks rolled into the airport.
Donald Trump has his own Baghdad Bob — Baghdad Barbie? — in Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary. She has been caught in lie after lie, but continues to feed them to the American public while taking softball questions for right-wing influencers who are part of the press corps.
In an interview on Tuesday with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade, Leavitt was asked about Trump’s acceptance of a $400 million luxury jet — called “a palace in the sky” — from Qatar, a clear violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution, scholars said.
“Do you worry that if they Qataris give us something like this that they’ll want something in return?” Kilmeade asked.
“Absolutely not,” Leavitt said, “because they know President Trump and they know he only works with the interests of the American public in mind.”
The backlash was immediate on social media, where one user asked: “Did she actually say that with a straight face?” Asked another: “Is her nose growing?” Still another: “If anyone ever deserved a raise for lying, Leavitt should be the first in line.”
This is similar to the lie she told on Friday when she said: “I think it’s frankly ridiculous that anyone in this room would even suggest that President Trump is doing anything for his own benefit. He left a life of luxury and a life of running a very successful real estate empire for public service ... this is a president who has actually lost money for being president.”
