Donald Trump’s FBI director has cast doubt on whether the Epstein files will be released in full.

Kash Patel said the administration is working to see if there is “anything more” from the documents that can be released to the public.

The US department of justice (DoJ) has until 19 Dec to release all files it holds on Jeffrey Epstein after Mr Trump bowed to pressure from within his party and signed a bill requesting their release.

However, certain documents could be withheld under a clause included in the bill, named the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which grants the department permission to withhold certain material.

Certain documents can be withheld if the justice department believes the publication “would jeopardise an active federal investigation or ongoing prosecution, provided that such withholding is narrowly tailored and temporary”.

The DoJ is also permitted to redact the identities and personal and medical records of Epstein’s victims and withhold information that “would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy” or “depicts or contains child sexual abuse”.

Asked about whether the DoJ would meet the 30-day deadline to release the files, Mr Patel told ABC there are “protective orders and orders to seal in place that legally prohibit the disclosure of information related to any investigation when there’s a court order of that fashion”.
