https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1kpm0rvxepo Donald Trump has said that he will pardon the former president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted of drug trafficking charges in a US court last year.
The US president said Hernández had been "treated very harshly and unfairly" in a social media post announcing the move on Friday.
Hernández was found guilty in March 2024 of conspiring to import cocaine into the US, and of possessing machine guns. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison.
Trump also threw his support behind conservative presidential candidate Nasry "Tito" Asfura in the Central American nation's general election, due to be held on Sunday.
Hernández, a member of the National Party, who served as Honduras's president from 2014 to 2022, was extradited to the US in April 2022 to stand trial for running a violent drug trafficking conspiracy and helping to smuggle hundreds of tons of cocaine to the US.
During his trial, prosecutors in New York said Hernández ran the Central American country like a "narco-state" and accepted millions of dollars in bribes from drug traffickers to shield them from the law.
He was also ordered to pay a fine of $8m (£6m) as part of his sentence.

Polls indicate this year's Honduran election remains a toss-up between three candidates including Asfura, the former mayor of Tegucigalpa and leader of the conservative National Party. Also in the running is Rixi Moncada, a former defence minister standing for the ruling left-wing Libre Party, and Salvador Nasralla, a television host with the centrist Liberal Party. Trump criticised Moncada and Nasralla on Friday, writing that the latter was "a boderline Communist" who was only running to split the vote between Moncada and Asfura. He characterised Asfura as "standing up for democracy" and praised him for campaigning against Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro, with whom Trump has engaged in a war of words in recent months. Nasralla has pledged to cut ties with Venezuela if he wins. The Trump administration has accused the left-wing Maduro - whose re-election last year was dismissed as illegitimate by many countries - of being the leader of a drugs cartel. It used countering drug trafficking as a justification for a military build-up in the Caribbean and has conducted strikes on vessels it says have been used for smuggling - though some analysts have described these moves as a means of pressuring Latin American leaders. Honduras has been governed since 2022 by President Xiomara Castro, who has forged close ties with Cuba and Venezuela. But Castro has maintained a co-operative relationship with the US, agreeing to preserve a long-running extradition treaty with it. Her country also hosts a US military base involved in targeting transnational organised crime in the region.

The more likely story is the guy paid trump a big enough bribe since this is the textbook pay 2 play crime syndicate masquerading as a presidency.

There isn't a political dirty trick on the books that could offend my sensibilities that Dems could pull to get total power in the USA at this point. As long as a freshly appointed Dem judge is willing to say with a straight face that it's legal, I don't care what they do to the function of government as long as they slam the door behind them if Republicans ever risk getting back in power. Turn Puerto Rico into 20 new states, bump SCOTUS to 50 seats, IDGAF. Trading back and forth control over the guard rails of government with Republicans has only led to generational damage to this country. We can revisit the issue of giving Republicans a fair shot at political power again after the current lot have been tried and served their sentences down to the staffer.

Ok, I really have trouble to keep up with Trumps mindset… he suddenly pardons a convicted EX-President that was jailed for heavy drug trafficing and the whole criminal corrupt package you can think of… but at the same time he want to kill a President Maduro for doing…well the exact same stuff? Hmmm… why do I start to think that Trumps „War on Drugs“ is actually not about drugs at all?

>>1461234 Venezuela isn't some kind of drug trafficking haven like Trump says it is and it's weird that he's using that excuse as justification for the coming war. At least 80% of the illegal drugs imported to America come from Mexico.

>>1461235 >from through
There is production in Mexico too of course, but a lot of what crosses the US/Mexico border crossed at least one other border to get there.
Ironically, if Trump actually did hit any real drug running boats transiting from Venezuela, their payload was most likely Europe bound or even just for tourists in the Caribbean.

Wait, no you don't have to forgive them. But their position is at least understandable if you remind yourself these are people that can barely tie their own shoes.

MAGAtards are cheering on Trump and his war vs. Venezuela. Why? Because they're "communist" and "it won't be a long war!". Newsflash: Vietnam was communist too. Still are to this day. US has diplomatic relations & trade with them. Trump referred to Mamdani - condemned as a communist by MAGAts - as "A very rational man". So someone at war with a communist country now but are friends with a communist country they were at war with decades ago, and said a communist mayor is rational: all by someone who had as part of their campaign last year 'No More Foreign Wars'. The orange Big Brother says 'We have always been at war with Oceania'.

>>1461262 Even Nixon's approval rating was 45%: and that was just before he resigned when Watergate was so bad for him in terms of Senate/House support that disappeared, so 38% shows how bad things are for Trump.
And to think: prior to that, Nixon was elected with such a landslide, with 60+% of the popular vote.

>>1461265 Nixon kept a lot of his bad shit in the closet and had a lot of legitimately good/popular policies. I could see people saying "well, he's unscrupulous, but he's deescalating the Cold War, and he's working on stagflation." Like I used to think Nixon was a good president, even if he was unscrupulous, up until I learned about his talks with the North Vietnamese during Johnson's term, bombing of Cambodia, and Southern Strategy. Even Hitler had high approval ratings through most of his reign, since he was credited with ending the depression and bringing dignity and strength back to Germany (never mind that the economic model he used to achieve this was unstable and required the looting of Europe to stave off the collapse). As for Trump, generally speaking, bad but improving is better than good, but deteriorating for public approval, and things weren't necessarily "good" at the start of Trump's term to begin with.

If Nixon enjoyed a conservatively biased media like trump did, Watergate would ahve been buried and he never would have had to resign.
Likewise if trump existed in Nixon's era, he'd already be in prison for his glut of crimes he commit after he got pardoned.
