Trump targets Biden's mental health in debate lead-up, despite aides' efforts to raise expectations
The president has eschewed typical debate prep instead meeting with advisers.

Some top advisers expect a dominant performance by the president, despite the opposing narratives of attacks on Joe Biden's mental state and the Trump campaign's work to raise expectations for the Democrat ahead of the showdown.
With days to go the debate, Trump has carried out conflicting and confounding strategies both repeatedly targeting Biden's mental acuity, claiming at a recent rally he doesn't know he's alive, while also making passing attempts to boost the former vice president as a seasoned debater who could outshine him.
"This guy doesn't have a clue. He doesn't know where the hell he is," Trump told his supporters in Pittsburgh a week to the day before the first debate. "This guy doesn't know he's alive."
At a campaign rally Saturday night in Pennsylvania, the president both attacked Biden as "dumb" before immediately lauding him as an experienced debater. "He’s a dumb guy. Always known as a dumb guy. But we look forward to seeing him in the debate. He's got a lot more experience. He's got 47 years. I’ve got 3 1/2 years. So we'll see. But he's got 47 years of experience."
On Friday, the president delivered an extended attack on Biden, comparing the showdown to a boxing match while repeatedly pointing to his head and saying, "To win matches you need that up here. ... This wins, probably, it's 50% of it. ... It's great that it's that way, isn't it?"
"[Biden's] not exactly prime time. ... This is not prime time for Joe. He never had too much of a prime time," the president added.

Also the president only has so much power in responding to something like this. He can free up funding to be used for the effort, and he can try to reduce exaggerated hysteria in messages to the people. That's about it. The rest is largely up to state and local governments, which are also constrained by existing laws and constitutional rights. Finally you have the people themselves who largely don't give a fuck. I went shopping today and almost half of the people weren't wearing masks, including me.

While we are roughly comparable with most of Europe in death rate as anon said (though Spain, Belgium, and the city states of San Marino and Andorra are the only ones actually worse than us in Europe, the rest are to at least some degree performing better), our infection rate is ridiculously high compared to any other developed country.
So why does the discrepancy between death rate and infection rate exist? Probably because the US population is relatively young compared to most of Europe, and thus generally less vulnerable to the disease. The average age in Spain, for example, is 43, but it's only 38 in the US. That doesn't mean having such a high infection rate is acceptable, though. While there obviously aren't any conclusive studies on this yet (given that the disease has existed for less than a year), a lot of evidence points to there being potential lasting complications from Covid even if it doesn't outright kill you, like long-term heart and lung damage. Point being, the US has handled the pandemic horribly compared to any developed country (and even most of the 3rd world) and put its populace at terrible risk as a result.
